1 Description
It would be very useful to define and offer a dedicated style for a category (and its sub-categories).
- Such a style would be a system style that defines the background image on the top as well as colours or icons.
- Inheritance of a dedicated category style needs to be supported (and should also be supported for content styles!)
- Category styles are imported as files (css, images) in the ILIAS file directory. There is no need to edit them with the content style editor.

JF, 23 Jan 2012: We highly appreciate this feature and schedule it for 4.3.
Matthias Kunkel, 16 May 2012: Together with this nice feature I recommend also to introduce a new behaviour for content style classes in categories. If I have assigned a style to a category and create a new sub-category, the style should be automatically adopted. After using this feature for years now I know that a users needs the heritage of styles to sub-objects in 99% of all cases.
5 Implementation
This feature has been implemented with ILIAS 4.3.
5.1 Declare Substyle
Styles for categories must be declared as substyles in the file template.xml. Each substyle consists of a css file (e.g. myskina.css, see below) and an images directory (e.g. images2, see below).

Because declaring a substyle in template.xml is a change of the default skin (delos), you need to create a skin in the Customizing directory of ILIAS to use this feature (see page Skins and Customizing in the ILIAS Development Guide). The main style of this customized skin and all css files and image directories for the substyles have to be in the same directory.
5.2 Assign Substyle
The assignment of substyles to selected categories is done in the ILIAS Administration » Style and Layout:

If you assign a substyle to a category this style will be assigned also to all sub-items of this category automatically.
