ILIAS - The open source learning platform

ILIAS is a powerful and flexible software for web-based learning and work. Far beyond the possibilities of a traditional learning management system (LMS), ILIAS can be used in a wide variety of contexts as a learning, knowledge and cooperation platform.

Thanks to its licensing as open source software and its lively development, support and user community, ILIAS can be precisely adapted to the needs of your institution or company. Accordingly, ILIAS installations look diverse and different in practice - exactly as they are needed in each individual case.

A comparison of different learning platforms quickly becomes a comparison of apples and oranges. For example, the character of an open source system is fundamentally different from commercial offerings - but there are also crucial differences in the open source sector.

Learning in ILIAS does not always mean "learning in courses". Instead, you decide on your own didactic approach: from formal to informal, from strictly guided to completely open. Thanks to the combination of the most diverse tools, you have almost unlimited possibilities.

In addition to various options for making your content available, you can also decide whether you only distinguish between learners, teachers and administrative staff - or whether you map your entire organisational structure precisely in ILIAS. Supervisors can then view the learning progress of their own employees, but not that of other departments.

ILIAS is committed to digital sovereignty. This aims to reduce political and economic dependencies in the software sector. It allows people to move independently, self-determined and securely in the digital world.

With ILIAS, you retain complete control over your data - and decisive co-determination options in the further development of the software: The GPL licence not only ensures users access to the programme code and the possibility of further development. It also guarantees the sustainability of development and independence from the corporate policies of commercial software producers.

By the way, you can read all about it in our brochure.

The ILIAS Association coordinates software development and process design, and provides the necessary infrastructure for development and quality assurance. It also organises the community events, such as the annual ILIAS conference, the development conferences and the user meetings. The association also finances numerous development projects to improve ILIAS, meet new technological requirements and make ILIAS more user-friendly.

You can also read everything about ILIAS in our current brochure.

And discover ILIAS live and up close - that's also possible: on our demo.

New to the Community?

Whether you are a member of the association or not: users of ILIAS are not alone! Many of them have joined together in regional or national working groups, cooperate with each other and exchange information and experiences. And that is exactly why you are now also on board!

In order to find a quick and easy entry into our community, there are various options. With the user groups you can find regional associations of users. Or have you ever heard of Discord, for example? The ILIAS community has integrated the conference and chat tool for direct virtual communication. It is used every day by many community members. Feel free to join us:

Alternatively, you can of course become active in forums directly here on the website. There are separate forums for a wide range of topics. And if you want to stay up to date in general, a look at the ILIAS blog will provide you with exciting and interesting news:

Shaping ILIAS together

Every user can contribute his or her own ideas and actively participate in the development even without programming knowledge. New features are first proposed and discussed in the feature wiki. The core team then decides on the inclusion of the feature in the core of ILIAS in a bi-weekly jour fix. Subsequently, the new feature is developed by commissioned programmers. After acceptance by the clients, it is made available on the development system. The new feature is then extensively tested there. With the release of the annual major release of ILIAS, it is available to all users free of charge.

Best of all, for each upcoming version, the feature will be maintained as needed, retested and enhanced by you or other users if there is interest.

1 Suggestion

  • Describe idea in the feature wiki
  • Get in contact with maintainers

2 Discussion

  • Take up comments
  • Finalise proposal

3 Jour-fixe decision

  • Maintainer and product manager decide on inclusion in the core of ILIAS
  • every monday from 1 o'clock in Jour Fixe VC

4 Funding

  • secure funding
  • obtain offer

5 Implementation

  • Programming by maintainer / developer
  • Creation of test cases

6 Testing

  • Test and accept feature from developer
  • Execution of test cases by testers from the community

7 Release

  • Release of one ILIAS version per year
  • Bugfix releases every 4 weeks

8 Repeat

  • Collecting new suggestions in the feature wiki

Do you have concrete ideas on how ILIAS could be expanded in its range of functions? Do you want to actively participate in new developments and have a say in them? In the feature wiki, every user can submit conceptualised ideas and discuss them with the community. If you want to participate in future ILIAS versions, this is the place to be.

Have you packed all important information? Then you're ready to fly!

Take off straight away from here. We'll give you a few practical tips and links along the way.

It's already on its way: soon there'll be a video here on docu.ilias.de.

ILIAS e.V. wishes you a good journey throughout the world of e-learning.

Overview of upcoming feature workshops

Some changes in ILIAS first require a joint discussion within the community. For this purpose, so-called feature workshops take place, to which everyone is cordially invited.

Special Interest Groups (SIGs)

In the Special Interest Groups, users meet who are particularly interested in certain topics concerning ILIAS.

International ILIAS conference

Of course, there is a separate section on docu.ilias.de for the annual international ILIAS conference, where you can look up all the important information about the upcoming conference.
