Reporting Session Statistics

1 Description

  • Basic: Implementation of tracking routines, data sorage in Live System. Tracking of new indicators such as rejected users. Interface to external analysis-system, csv raw data.
  • Report generation: User interface to configurate the collection of data, presented observation indicators and access authorisation.
  • Analysis Basic: external storage and analysis of data to ensure flexibility, performance and data protection.
  • Analysis Reports: Implementation of long time history and periodic presentation.
  • optional: implementation of Online Analytical Processing OLAP-interface
  • implementation of export interfaces to all reporting formes for csv and pfd.
Shows the number of active Sessions as a function of time.

Additional quantities are:
  • number of blocked sessions (due to session control) in a given time intervall
  • number of logouts and timeouts in a given time intervall.
The basic unit of time is 15 minutes.
The session statistics is to be located in "administration > statistics and learning progress"
There will be a pseudonomyzed raw-data csv-export of single events (login, logout, etc.).
There will be an excel-export for each each report - containing a brief header.
The access to session statistics can be differentiated by  "edit" and "export" rights.

Open questions:
  • Should the level of anomyzation of the raw-data csv-export be configurable? (personalized, pseudonomized, anonymized)
  • Should the right to access session statistics, object statistics and learning progress ("view"-right) be independent from each other?

4 Discussion

Matthias Kunkel, 30 Mar 2011: Qualitus has presented concept and implementation plans for this feature. The ILIAS core team is highly appreciating this extension of ILIAS.

Jour Fixe, 26 April 2011: Features has been postponed and set to "not scheduled yet" due to cancelled funding of Bundesagentur für Arbeit

JF 6 Feb 2012: We highly appreciate the idea. We reschedule it for 4.3.

5 Implementation

JL 31 Aug 2012: The statistics can be found in Administration > Statistics and Learning Progress > Session Statistics. There is no active cron-job or any other setting needed, a user with sufficient permissions is able to "Aggregate Data" manually which will bring the underlying data up-to-date (depending on server load this will also be done automatically at certain points in time). The statistics are most useful in combination with "Load Dependent Session Handling", which can be activated in the General Settings. They give a detailed report about the number of login attempts over different amounts of time and defined periods.
Please keep in mind that the data "resolution" consists of 15 minute slots so no details beyond that are available.
