Portfolio-overview in member area of courses

1 Requirements

There should be a optional column for portfolios in the member area (Edit Participants) of courses. So the course administrator is able to see, who of the course members have given access permission to their portfolios. The names of the accessible portfolios are displayed in this column. These portfolios are available out of the column by link. The export of the link to the portfolio should also be provided.

4 Discussion

JF 18 Mar 2013: We discussed two alternatives today:

1. Introducing a new Column "Portfolio" as presented in the screenshot above. The column would list all portfolios shared with the logged in user.
  • Advantages
    • Re-Use of existing members view.
    • All exisiting features of the view can be combined.
  • Disadvantages
    • The activation of the "Portfolio" column is "hidden" in a list of user profile properties.
    • Different scenarios like membership administration and portfolio workflows would need different sets of columns. Activating all of them makes the view quite complex, esp. a column with portfolio titles could need some space.
2. Introducing a new subtab "Portfolios" (under the Members tab) which would be activated in the course settings and lists all members (no tutors and administrators) with a list of their portfolios. Other relevant columns (e.g. passed) can be added, too.
  • Advantages
    • A new view could be aligned to the needs of the porfolio scenario (e.g. using special filters).
    • Portfolio relevant features could be added, e.g. tutors would be able to mark the "relevant" portfolios.
    • We would have two views, but each of them would be less complex.
  • Disadvantages
    • Not all features of the member view would be automatically in the new view (e.g. "Accessed Refused", "Notification")
    • View must be activated in the settings.

We did not come to a conclusion today, as the core team would more prefer solution two, but the FH Dortumd more alternative number one. We would like to collect other users opinions on this. Please add your comments and add the point to our Jour Fixe agenda again.

19.03.2013, Ulrike Wilkens

We prefer and would strongly vote for the first solution.

Having the option to display additional columns related to shared objects of course members (and group members, as well!) would especially improve the task of lecturers and tutors, who deal with the "supervision" (comments, feedback…) of  process oriented "portfolio work", i.e. getting and staying in contact with students, who are writing blogs or developing portfolios and have to be enforced in their learning process reflection etc. (or to be remembered to add the lecturer/tutor to the "sharing list" ). (And: The "exercise"-functionality does not help us in this respect, because  the contact, feedback, motivating communication etc. has to be supported DURING the blog- or PF-writing process, not at the end of a seminar or project, when the product is delivered e.g. as "exam result".)

Therefore the option to use the "send mail"-function in the member list is essential to manage this kind of tutorial work.

We defined a very similar solution in Bremen, not knowing yet the Dortmund work, because we wanted to get rid of our workarounds (the tutors works with "user named"-weblink-lists, linking to permanent blog and PF links) to connect "group membership obligations" with "individually shared resources" during the process-oriented portfolio work.

So the first alternative described above would correspond best to our (upcoming to the feature wiki) proposal for a better solution to display, search, and filter the list "Ressources of others…" on the PD (in "My workspace" and "Portfolio") There we also suggest to implement the option to send mails directly from the overview to the "Users-who-shared-their-objects-with-me"-list.

[2013-03-19, Christian Bogen] Universität Stuttgart would appreciate the implementation of the first solution, too, especially since I understand that not doing that would leave us with no solution in 4.4 at all. I think Ulrike already summed up the (other) pro arguments nicely.

26.03.2013, Anja Löwe

We also prefer the first solution and agree with the argumentation of Ulrike Wilkens.

JF 27 May 2013: @Ulrike: It would not have been a problem to provide the "Send Mail" functionality on the dedicated tab as well. We go with the first solution and schedule it for 4.4, since the majority prefers this solution.

5 Implementation

JL 04 Sep 2013: This feature is now available in 4.4/trunk. It has been implemented for courses and groups according to the first solution described above (optional column in member list).
