Move or Link - user interface

1 Description

If you want to move or link an object, then you get in 4.0 a new interface. We wish that ILIAS gives some help to the user to the question: Where I am? Where can I paste my objects?

I think the following two changes in the user interface could be helpful:
  • a better indentation
  • make the course/group visible with helpful lines and some space between "my course" and other courses/categories

2 Status

  • Scheduled for Release: ILIAS 4.3 (Indentation and highlighting, as in JF comment of 2 Nov 2009)
  • Funding: Universität Bern
  • Development: Feature is to be developed by Leifos (Indentation and highlighting, as in JF comment of 2 Nov 2009)

4 Discussion

JF 2 Nov 2009: We like the bigger indentation and we suggest to highlight the current node (like in learning modules) for better orientation. Horizontal lines are not used anywhere else when a tree is shown and we think it would not immediately be clear for the user what the lines are for.

Pascal, 2010-03-17: Unfortunately we had only negative feedback to the new treeview for the move/link feature. Maybe we should think about this in general.
Things I can imagine as problematic are:
- Compared to a Operationsystem the workflow in ILIAS is now very different.
- people working with the tree-view enabled in the repository are maybe confused about an further treeview.
- As we are going more and more to open our courses and groups people get a bigger tree, which maybe makes the tree unusable.

JF 22 Mar 2010: Up to now we only received positive feedback. We think that highlighting the current node and increasing the indentation will improve usability further. You definitely need less clicks than before. So please try to analyze what makes it difficult for your users in detail and let us know.

Pascal, 8th June 2010: Here the feedback of our users how didn't like the new workflow
  • Its too much scrolling
  • "it gets you clobbered over the head with this", see screenshot
    • There are overextended because they can see to many things they don't need in this workflow
  • You can not search for the target anymore using the search function (this is something which also affects me as an administrator)
Others don't minde the new workflow. Someone said that it is create be able to link objects to many places at one time.

We are getting to make our installation more open to make shared content happend. This make the tree even bigger.

Yvonne, 25th June 2010

Some of our people are afraid of this tree view. They have the feeling that they could link an object to a wrong place. That you can see the hole tree, even you haven't everywhere the right to administrate some of them, "shocks" the users.

Perhaps it would make sense that the tree only shows these objects, on which you have the accessibility to move oder link something. So people doesn't see the hole tree of the installation but only her groups, courses, and so on. Or is this technically not possible oder too difficult to implement?

Simon, 21th March 2011

We also miss this feature at the HSLU Lucerne. We would like to see both methods implemented ("copy" and "copy to clipboard")
We think this wouldn't be to much work - Just save the ID of the source object until the User clicks "paste", then call the normal move function.

5 Implementation

Better indentation and highlighting of current position have been implemented for 4.3 as suggested by Jour Fixe.
