Context Sensitive Search

1 Description

Similar to the Wiki-Search, we should have a Forum search. Users should have the possibility:
  • to search just in one forum
  • or to search multiple forums at once
in German: "Eine ohne Umwege verfügbare Suchmöglichkeit über ein Forum oder über mehrere Foren hinweg. Als Suchergebnisse werden nur Forenbeiträge angezeigt."

This would be a useful feature for all scenarios using different forums intensively - and it`s also useful for the ILIAS-forums on www.ilias.de ;-)

4 Discussion

JF 24 Oct 2011: We appreciate the idea. But we would like to work out a general concept "search within an object" (wikis, forums, learning modules, glossaries). It should use Lucene, if available and component based database fallbacks, if not.

The current search input field in the main menu (and its drop down) should be extended to select the different options (search in this object, globally, ...).

iLUB-Team 1.11.2011:
Suggestion 1: Improve the user-interaction of the search field (top right)

Actually, we suggest that we improve the actual "global-search"-field (top right). With an improved search-field, users should have the possibility to search in the actual context.

Example: User is in a course (eg. "Test"), so he can search the whole ILIAS, but he can also click the checkbox of "Im aktuellen Kontext" suchen. ILIAS then starts the Search, but in the actual context (in the Course "Test"). So ILIAS shows the results of this Search (only in the course), and the breadcrumb to the "Test"-Course is shown. (See two pictures below).

With this featur, users then can also search in one forum or in multiple forums, they have to go the the forum or to the category with different forums, then use the context-search-checkbox.

We also suggest to have a second option (second checkbox): "Advanced Search"

HL, 2 Oct. 2012 - Usability issues

a) If you are in a course and want to seach at current position, then you have to do:
  1. Type the search term
  2. Click the radio-button "At Current Position"
  3. Click in the search field again
  4. Hit "Enter"
Suggestion - new User-Interaction:
  1. Type the search term
  2. A Click in the whole field (Radio button and text > same behavior as in the course-settings) activates the button
  3. The focus (cursor) should stay in the search-field if possible » a "Return-key" starts the search.
b) After a search "At Current Position", ILIAS shows the Search-form and all Search-results. If a user types another word in the upper-right search-field, then ILIAS should show again both option: "In the repository" and "At Current Position". The option "At Current Position" should be activated.

JF 26 Nov 2012: We will improve the usability during stable.

HL, 14. August 2013: An additional issue:
c) The possibility to decide: Search "Globally" or "At current Position" does only work when you are logged in.

JF 19 Aug 2013: @HJL we agree, but why not filing a bug report?
