Configure Starting Point in ILIAS
1 Requirements
The administration of ILIAS should offer a setting to configure which page is displayed to users after having logged in. This feature could be used to point users to another starting point then the Overview of their Personal Desktop, e.g. to the top node of the repository or to their personal Workspace.
Our student will have their Personal external calendar in our new Campus-Management System. With the feature Embedding External Calendars they can see their personal calendar rendered in ILIAS.
Now it would be very good if ILIAS has also the following new option "Starting point in ILIAS"
First: it should be configurable in the Main-Administraion: "Starting point for users": When this is selected, then admins have 4 possibilities to choose.
a) Starting point is Personal Desktop (Overview). (This is the actual behavior in ILIAS 4.2)
b) Starting point is Personal Desktoop (Overview), but users can change the personal Starting point in their personal settings individually (see c1-c5)
c) All users start with the same Starting point (Sys-Admin chooses the Starting point, !!! With this, the Starting points of all users change !!!)
c1) Start with "Overview"
c2) Start with "My Courses and Groups"
c3) Start with "My workspace" (only available if My workspace is available)
c4) Start with "Calendar" (only available if Calendar is available)
c5) Start with a Repository-object, Course or group (if repository object, course or group is no longer available, ILIAS starts with the Personal Desktop (Overview)
d) All users start with the same Starting point, but with the option: users can change the Starting point in their settings (Sys-Admin chooses the Starting point (see c1-c5), and Sys-Admin can choose: Only new users get this new setting, or all Starting points will be new)
Second: With option b und d, users does then have the possibility to change their Starting point (b1, b2, b3, b4 or b5) in their Personal settings.
Additional: This features should be a role-based setting: Sys-Admins can define exceptions: A specific global role can have another Personal Starting point.

4 Discussion
JF 19 Mar 2012: We appreciate this feature. However we would like to wait with an implementation of the role-based settings, until the basic feature is introduced and institutions really need the role-based settings.
Matthias Kunkel, 31 JUL 2012: I would suggest to call the option "Start Page", not "Personal Starting Point" (which sounds like something I could edit according to my personal preference). The "Start Page" is the entrance point into ILIAS for _all_ users - so it is a "general" not a "personal" starting point.
5 Implementation
- The defined starting page is set for all users in Administration > General Settings. A role-based setting of the starting page has not been implemented for 4.3
- Starting points could be:
- Personal Desktop : Overview
- Personal Desktop : My Courses and Groups
- Personal Desktop : My Workspace
- Personal Desktop : Calendar
- Root node of repository (top level)
- Selected repository object
- There is an option to allow users to change their personal starting point (and use another target out of the list above).
