The Jour Fixe took place at Monday, September 16, from 09h15 - 13h15  at ILIAS office in Cologne with the following participants:

2 Bugfixing for maintained versions 4.2 and 4.3

We went through Mantis and had a overlook about all open issues reported or modified since the last Jour Fixe. All issues were screened and assigned to the responsible developers. We discussed in detail:

  1. 0011629: Users can always exit test (at the first question), (suspend test option is de-activated) : The presentation of the first question should "start" the first pass, not the answering of the first question.
  2. Cannot search for Group Members : The user needs at least "write" permission or "read" permission, if the option "show members" is activated, to be able to see the members of a group or course. It would be a privacy issue otherwise. Instead of presenting an empty list, ILIAS should output an info message, if the user does not have the permission to list the members.
  3. Performance when trying to download folders with huge content : There is another open bug report that suggest to check the total amount of file sizes (before zip is invoked) and to abort the procedure with an information message, if this size exceeds a certain (configurable) limit. This is still the preferred way to solved this, since it would prevent the necessity to set download options for each container.
  4. 0011683: RBAC in copied objects: Unclear pattern : It would be desirable to keep permission settings for roles that appear in both contexts (or a copied from the source to the target context). However technically this is quite complex to accomplish. In general the permission handling during the copy process could be improved, e.g. configurable (keep permission as far as possible vs. use permissions for "new" objects). This should be discussed in a feature wiki entry.
  5. 0008834: Change password on first login after admin changed password is not forced : The current behaviour has been verified by the original funder of the feature. We also think that the current behaviour is ok and not a bug. The behaviour described by rugy would be an extension or change. Please move the conceptual discussion to the feature wiki.
  6. 0011641: Wrong description or wrong behaviour of function "Change Password on First Login" : We consider this being a bug. Users should not be forced to enter a password if they users registered themselves. If you need a new db field, add it.

3 Preparing ILIAS 4.4.0_beta1

3.1 Developing Issues 4.4

  1. Learning progress and other information in listGUI : We agree that the presentation must be improved before a stable version of ILIAS 4.4 is released. We ask everyone to add suggestions and opinions. The discussion and the improvements can be continued during beta phase.
  2. Changed background of test questions : Matthias will work out a perfect blue solution. We will integrate it with 4.4.
  3. Cloze Question Improvements: We appreciate this improvement as described by BH & MB on 15 July. This can still go into 4.4.
  4. Item preview from question pool plus feedback : All data that is available (feedback/hints) should be presented in the question pool presentation. We do not need checkbox settings to enable/disable these items in the preview. The preview should be as close to the presentation in the test as possible. We schedule this for 4.5 (implementation for 4.4 is not possible due to missing resources).
  5. List of question: redesign travel light : The green and red icons should be used for learning progress only. We would like to use text here. "Yes"/"Ja" should be added, if a question has been answered, otherwise the field should be left empty.

3.2 Current Status of 4.4 Development

At the time being, 176 features are scheduled for 4.4. We are scheduling the first beta release 4.4.0_beta 1 for September 30, 2013.
 
Due to the upcoming release date for beta1 our developers cannot implement all scheduled features in the remaining time. We therefore need to postpone not only unfunded features but also those which are not contracted yet.

The following features already scheduled for 4.4 will be postponed to 4.5 due to missing resources or open conceptual discussion.

More features listed in sections D to E of the ILIAS 4.4 page might be postponed on one of the next Jour Fixe meetings.

4 Development of ILIAS 4.5

4.1 Feature Requests for 4.5

  1. Matching Question : We still appreciate this feature for 4.4, if not possible it could be implemented for 4.5 as well. Please also update the javascript implementation used in SCORM / Learning Modules.
  2. Test Results: Link the question with an anchor : We apprecite the feature as describe in comment "BH & MB 15 July 2013" and still schedule it for 4.5.
  3. Test Results: Show right answers in Show users detailed results (marked passed) : We think the presentation side-by-side is more readable. We currently do not support the implementation of two different ways to present the correct solution, so the accordion implementation can be skipped. The activation of the presentation for learners must be configurable. The options should not affect the presentation for tutors. For tutors a "toggle" on top of the page "Display Correct Solutions On/Off" would be ok.
  4. Multiple pass scoring: change default setting to scoring the best pass : We reject this request as long as only one instition supports this idea. Usually changing the default behaviour of settings confuses the users, and for us it seems to be questionable if the change improves the situation for the majority of ILIAS users. If either the SIG Assessment or three other institutions back this idea, we could schedule it for the main release.
  5. Question pool: make text size configurable in cloze question : We currently have no idea why this could be useful. Usually the text size should be determined by the style (css) and the browser settings of the user (View/Zoom). We could even imagine to remove the feature from the error text question. Please elaborate on your motivation for this request and re-schedule it on the JF agenda.
  6. Learner print view for Tests : We need to know exactly what the additional needs are, based on the 4.4 implementation. E.g. for us it is unclear what "a facility to choose different formats of print outputs" should mean. Please describe the requirements in more detail and re-schedule this on the JF agenda.
  7. Test Results Presentation: Show results only one selected user at a predefined time : We see some added value with this feature, but it would add complexity on the other hand. We would like to hear other users opinions before deciding on this. Maybe the SIG assessments could discuss this, too.
  8. Essay Questions in Learning Modules : We support the idea and schedule it for 4.5. It should be possible to give a "general" feedback to the user that e.g. includes a good solution.
  9. Extension of Poll : We schedule most of the requests for 4.5. We have to specify the details of the "particiation overview" feature. It could be an option that only tutors (write permission) see who has voted for what, or that even learners can see this information. Most importantly the learner must be aware of whether the current poll is (pseudo-)anonym or not - so an appropriate message must be displayed somewhere.
