1 Summary
Media containers in the ILIAS Page Editor should offer a Maximum Size option, either in addition to or instead of Fixed Size. It would let users limit an image's displayed dimensions while preserving responsive behaviour, so the image can shrink to fit smaller screens.
2 Problem Statement
The Fixed Size option lets users adjust how large an image appears, but removes its responsiveness. Users frequently need to scale down oversized images directly through the media container's Instance Properties or Default Properties, while keeping the image responsive.
Some users cannot resize the image outside ILIAS or do not know the appropriate display dimensions in advance. They use Fixed Size to experiment, but the resulting fixed dimensions do not meet their need to preserve responsiveness. The Resize Image File option may not be understood or may be unsuitable when users want to keep the original file unchanged - for example, if the content or desired display size may change later.
3 Concept
Provide a Maximum Size option for media containers. Users can set maximum width and height while allowing the image to scale down proportionally when the available space is smaller.
The option could be offered alongside Fixed Size, preserving fixed sizing where it is intentionally needed. A short explanatory note should clarify that Maximum Size sets an upper limit and the image remains responsive. If the interface or implementation makes a separate option unnecessary, an alternative would be to change the existing sizing behaviour.
4 User Interface Modifications
4.1 List of Affected Views
- Media settings in the ILIAS Page Editor
- Instance Properties for media containers
- Default Properties for media containers
- Instance Properties for media containers
4.2 User Interface Details
Add a Maximum Size setting alongside or instead of Fixed Size.
4.3 New User Interface Concepts
This proposal introduces a new sizing option in the media container settings. It should follow the existing form controls and terminology used in the ILIAS Page Editor. The explanatory note should be available to assist users in distinguishing Maximum Size from Fixed Size.
4.4 Technical Aspects
For media, the maximum dimensions should be implemented using CSS constraints such as max-width and max-height, rather than fixed width and height values. The image should preserve its aspect ratio (checkbox) and scale down when the available space is smaller than its maximum dimensions.
