1 Summary
During flashcard training, the user can switch between mode "term vs. explanation" and mode "explanation vs. term". This is currently not possible.
2 Problem Statement
Currently, the flashcard training modes “Term vs. Explanation” and “Explanation vs. Term” can only be defined in the central glossary settings. Since flashcard training is generally intended for individual learning, users should be able to decide at any time which mode they would like to use for studying. The glossary settings should therefore include an option that allows users to switch between the two modes. For learning scenarios in which a fixed mode is required for flashcard training, the option to switch modes can be disabled in the glossary settings. This should also remain the default setting.
3 Concept
An additional option is introduced in the glossary settings that allows users to switch individually between the “Term vs. Explanation” and “Explanation vs. Term” modes during flashcard training (Mockup 1). The option can only be selected if flashcard training itself has also been enabled.
If the option to switch individually between the flashcard modes is enabled in the glossary settings, the “Term vs. Explanation” and “Explanation vs. Term” buttons are displayed in the presentation view under the “Flashcards” tab, next to the “Reset all subjects” button. These buttons allow users to switch individually between the two modes (Mockup 2).
The progress in the flashcard subjects remains unaffected when switching between the modes and is not reset.
4 User Interface Modifications
4.1 List of Affected Views
- Glossary settings: enable/disable individual mode switching
- Flashcards tab: individual mode switching
4.2 User Interface Details

4.3 New User Interface Concepts
No new interface contepts.
4.4 Technical Aspects
No technical issues.
5 Non-Functional Implications
5.1 Security
No security implications.
5.2 Privacy
Ilias will store the presentation mode selected by the user for each glossary that supports this mode. This is necessary to ensure the intended behaviour of the flash cards. The data will be deleted once the glossary or the user is deleted.
5.3 Accessibility Implications
We do not see any accessibility implications.
