Test: Abandon Gamification

1 Reasons to Abandon Feature

As announced at the DevConf in Cologne in March 2026, we propose to remove the test result feature "Gamification" to reduce the amount of legacy UI and code. (Settings --> Scoring and Results --> Gamification):

The authorities don't have the resources to revise this feature as a whole. If one or more interested parties are willing to finance a revision of the feature, this abandonment will not proceed.Currently no one has contacted the authorities to signalize the possibility of funding for this process. (Concept --> Discussion --> Decision --> Programming --> Acceptance)

We need to set an internal deadline after the removal of code will be carried out.Based on our experience in recent years, we would like to set this date for July 1, 2026.

3 Discussion

Use the following discussion section to express your objections against this request or your consent to get rid of this feature.

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], 13 APR 2026: We follow the authorities' suggestion and accept the request to abandon the gamification feature in the T&A. We ask all interested stakeholders that are using this feature to mention their interest in keeping this feature and to secure funding for an improvement and necessary refactoring of the feature. A final removal of the feature should be announced in the first JF in July 2026.

Potter, Chris [ChrisPotter], 13 APR 2026: As it stands, I support dropping the gamification feature. But I do this with a heavy heart. Gamification is something that really works to inspire learners (I only need to look at my son to see how much he is motivated by such gamification of learning). However, in its current condition, the gamification of results in the T&A Object is extremely 'bare bones' and visually unappealing.

The ideal situation would be to improve and expand what we have. But this would require funding. If no funding is available to improve it, I feel that this feature must be dropped. If anyone does want to fund this feature, I would be more than happy to help working on a feature request.

I know that some people will disagree with me. But I feel that there should be minimum standards in ILIAS for functionality and visual presentation. Imagine that you were working at the ILIAS stand at the LearnTec in Karlsruhe. Ask yourselves, would you be happy demonstrating this feature to prospective ILIAS users? If the answer is not a resounding 'yes!' then you know that the feature either has to be impoved or abandoned.
