Adapt view with left hand Tree in Mail to new Layout
Page Overview
[Hide]1 Initial Problem
With the introduction of the new layout in ILIAS 6.0, the tree was also revised. Now all existing trees have to be transferred into the new UI components and into the slate.
Some tree views, such as the tree in mail system, have special requirements and require a separate feature request.
2 Conceptual Summary
Option 1 (This option is similar to the feature request "Forum: tree in slate triggered by view control".):
If a user clicks on the entry Communication >> Mail, the inbox of the mail system is displayed by default in the Folder-tab. The tree of the mail system can be opened and closed via a view control. If a user clicks on Open Mail Folders, the mail folders open in the Tools slate area. Users can use the slate to switch between folders, create their own folders under User Folders, close and collapse the slate.
Option 2:
If a user clicks on the entry Communication >> Mail, the inbox of the mail system is displayed by default in the Folder-tab. The tree of the mail system is opened directly in a tool slate.
3 User Interface Modifications
3.1 List of Affected Views
- Personal Desktop >> Mail
3.2 User Interface Details
- The entries Inbox, Trash, Drafts and Sent are displayed as menu entries in the main bar under Communication >> Mail and separated from the user folders. If you click on one of the main menu entries, the mail system opens in the Mail tab.
- If a user clicks on the Folder tab, the User Folders tree is displayed in a toolslate.

7 Discussion
Kunkel, Matthias [mkunkel], 20 MAY 2019 : What were the reasons to dismiss the first suggestion ("Earlier Steps") and to display the tree instead? The new suggestions keeps a conceptual problem of the original implementation - the display of the top node "Mail Folders". If you click on this node you are redirected to the "Inbox" node because it doesn't make sense to show the content of this top node - you already see it in the tree. This top node has only folders as content but no mails. So, if we re-use the tree presentation, we should at least hide the top node.
JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], 20 MAY 2019: We highly appreciate this suggestion and schedule option 2 for 6.0. It would be great to hide the top node "Mail Folders" if possible because it has no additional value and always redirects to the Inbox.
8 Implementation
Implemented as described above.
