Tabs

Location of Taxonomies and Metadata

1 Initial Problem

There are three different types of "Taxonomies" in ILIAS:

  1. You can add taxonomy definitions in Categories (over Taxonomies tab).
  2. You can assign taxonomy definitions of categories onto ILIAS objects like files, courses, links,... (over Metadata tab).
  3. You can add taxonomy definitions in objects and assign them in their sub-items, f.e. in question pool test or glossary (over Taxonomies Submenu in Settings and Edit menu of sub-item).
In this request we focus on (1) and (2), how to add and assign taxonomy definitions of categories.

Taxonomies can be added over a Taxonomies tab in categories. The assignment of these taxonomies can be done over Metadata tab below LOM-Metadata (see ILIAS 5.2).

That's a mismatch, because taxonomies have nothing to do with LOM-Metadata. Additional users have to match "Taxonomies" with "Metadata" to find the right place, where taxonomies can be assigned.

To help users to assign ILIAS-objects to their category-taxonomies, the location of taxonomy definition and assignment should be changed and be separated from LOM.

2 Conceptual Summary

We propose to move taxonomies in a submenu of metadata tab.

Adding taxonomies and assigning taxonomies come together in the same tab. They are always in the "Metadata" tab. "Taxonomies" tab of categories will be removed.

Categories "Metadata" tab would have following subtabs:

  1. LOM
  2. Custom Metadata
  3. Custom Metadata Definition
  4. Export Files of Local Custom Metadata
  5. Taxonomy Settings
  6. Taxonomy Definition

Other ILIAS objects

The assignment of taxonomies is removed from the LOM sub tab to a new "Taxonomy Assignment" sub tab.

7 Discussion

Killing, Alexander [alex], 20 Mar 2017: Some remarks:

  • If courses could define their own taxonomies (currently only possible in categories), we would have three subtabs: "Taxonomy Classification" (assignment of the object to tax nodes), "Taxonomy Settings" and "Taxonomy Definitions".
  • Categories currently do not come with a Metadata tab.
  • Would the "custom metadata" for courses be editable at two locations, "Settings > Course Info" and "Metadata > Custom Metadata"?

Amstutz, Timon [amstutz], 21 March 2017: @Killing, Alexander [alex] Thx for the remarks.

Correct
  • Categories currently do not come with a Metadata tab.
I think they do, but only if "Custom Metadata" is enabled in Settings.
  • Would the "custom metadata" for courses be editable at two locations, "Settings > Course Info" and "Metadata > Custom Metadata"?
That is the current case in 5.2, isn't it?

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], April 24, 2017: We highly appreciate this suggestion and schedule it for 5.3. Notice: The labels on the screenshots are outdated. The new sub tab is called "Taxonomy Assignment".  We see a need to add the Metadata tab to all object types in the future. Otherwise we have some object types that can do taxonomy assignments while others don't. A feature request "Metadata tab for all object types" will be added to the wiki by Matthias.
