Tutor Feedback in Peer Feedback Mode
Page Overview
[Hide]1 Requirements
Right now, course admin or tutors have no chance of adding their feedback to the peer feedbacks that users get from their peers. A course admin can see and review that feedback(s) but cannot add his/her comment.
While this might not be too relevant in course settings with large numbers of participants, it miehgt be very important in smaller courses where tutors / lecturers what to use this tool intensively. Tutor feedback should be available at all times after the submission deadline has been passed.
Implementation:
- add a textbox, rating on the actual feedback page "Show received feedback" for the tutor feedback
- add link to "Submissions and Grades" below "Show Received Feedback": "Give Tutor Feedback"
- disregarding whether the anonymous mode is switched on: display the name of the tutors who have given feedback
- mark the tutorfeedback visually (e.g. yellow background)
1.1 Proposal Kunkel, Lützenkirchen, Killing, 21 May 2014
We made an overview of all existing feedback features on the page Exercise: Overview.
We think that from the requirements listed here and in Marcos comments below, the existing possibilities for tutors to give feedback (text comment, individual files, and files for all learners) are a starting point and need to be improved. There is no need to add another way for the tutor to provide feedback within the peer feedback feature.
We suggest the following improvements:
- The "Feedback file for all learners" will be renamed into "Sample Solution", to separate this feature clearly from the other feedback options.
- The Input Field "Comment for Learner" will be moved to the "Feedback Column" and be named Feedback Text.
- If this feedback text (former comment for learner) is modified a notification will be sent to the learner.
- The "Note" field will be renamed into "Note for tutors"
- JF 26 May 2014: As a usability fix we als accept to make it configurable if the sample solution should become available with submission or with the deadline of an assignment.
1.2 Open Issue: Introduce Fixe-Star-Rating Feature for Tutors?
In the JF on 26 May 2014 we had a longer discussion, if tutors should also have the possibility to rate the learners submissions with a five-star rating. This would make it more consistent to the peer-feedback, on the other hand, the tutor has already the possibility to set the passed status and the mark. We fear that the intepretation of three ways to give feedback could be difficult for the learner.
If you support this idea, please add a comment to this page.

4 Discussion
Alex Killing 10 Apr 2014: I support this idea, but would like to know Jörgs opinion, since I am not sure about the technical implications.
JL, 11 Apr 2014: I have no objection to this. We just have to decide if tutor feedback is treated just as peer feedback in regard to the "give feedback to access received feedback" - maybe tutor feedback should be visible at once. This could of course be a setting, but peer review settings are IMHO already complicated enough.
Marko Glaubitz, 16.04.2014: I think that should not be visible along with the peer feedbacks, but "tutors" should be able to give feedback even after the feedbacking time is up! . However, it should be marked (siminlar to Forum: "Top Thema") as a tutor feedback, maybe by a background colour or something in this direction.
Just an idea: could this way of giving feedback be implemented in the excercise in general, and not just for the peer feedback funictionality. Right now, the feedback an the execercise unit page is very easy to overlook and there is no notification that it is there at all. Imho, this would definitely enhance the current "tutor" feedback functionality. What do you think?
JF 28 Apr 2014: Alex/Jörg will provide a proposal for the different tutor feedback handling. Until then this request is postponed.
Marko Glaubitz, 08.05.2014: Ok, feel free to get in touch with me to discuss this. We would really like to see this extension of the peer feedback feature in 4.5, sinc ethis has already been requested by our lecturers.
Alex, 22 May 2014: We have added a proposal for this request, see "Requirements" section on top.
JF 26 May 2014: We support the changes as outlined by Jörg, Matthias and Alex on 21 May 2014 and schedule the request for 4.5.
Marko Glaubitz, 23.07.2014: One of our lecturers just pointed out that it would be extremely helpfull to get a sort of overview within the table which states how many texttual peer feedbacks + word count of each feedback have been given to each user in order to avoid having to click on every single user's "Show given feedback" link. This would be extremely helpful in avoiding problems wiht people who "cheat" by typing only very brief or one-word answers.
5 Implementation
JL 04 Aug 2014: The features have been implemented for 4.5/trunk as described in the proposal above. The usability of the comments for learners feature on the "submission & grades" (both "assignment view" and "participant view") still needs to be finalized:
- What is the definition of "last change" in the Submission & Grades screen (DB: "status_time")?
- Is there a way to enhance the usability and/or layout of the Submission & Grades screen (which probably could also be applied to the Participants View screen)?
JL 19 Aug 2014: Regarding "last change", see Mantis #13741.
