JF 25 Nov 2013: We support this idea and schedule it for 4.5. This could be separate features on the overview and detailed view.

4 Implementation

This feature is now available in the trunk.
A condition is that the file preview is activated in "Administration > Files and Folders > File Preview". If set, records in a DataCollection are displayed with the preview icon:
