Course forum notification

1 Description

Members of a course (and group) should be notified automatically about new postings in a course/group forum. They do not need to activate the forum notification manually. It is already set for all members.
  • A tutor/author can decide for each forum if default notification is enabled.
  • All members of the course/group receive notifications automatically - as long as they do not deactivate notification in the forum (as already known).
  • Every notification mail has a link to deactivate this setting.

Michael Jansen, 05.

JF, 05 Oct '09: This would make the feature very complex. Why not changing the default behaviour and every course participant gets a notification about new forum postings? Why administrating every single user? What happens if these settings are not maintained properly? We should keep the feature "stupid simple".

Nadia Krzywon, 09 Oct 2009: I need to know, where the Administration for the notification should be implemented. Either in Courses/Groups or for each forum seperatly?
Another queston is, what happens if there are more than one forum in the respective course/group?

Matthias Kunkel, 03 Nov '09: There should be two settings in the forum, section "Edit Properties":
  1. Enable automatic notification for course and group members
  2. Allow members to disable notification
From my point of you, these settings are always attached to the forum, not to the container object above.
And I do not see a problem if there are several forums within a course because each forum handles its settings independently.

Julia Kehl, 02 Mar 2010: It is confusing, that notifications can be enabled and disable on forum layer (“Enable Notification for this Forum”) as well as on topic layer (“Enable Notification for this topic”). So if you have enabled notification for the whole forum you can still enable for a single topic. Proposed solution: If notification is launched for the whole forum thread will appear when a text "notification for this forum is activated.

Matthias Kunkel, 29 Mar 2010: I suggest to discuss this at the next Jour Fixe. I agree totally with Julia! Such a sensibility of the feature would improve user experience.

JF 19 Apr 2010: We agree, if the notification is already acivated "on a higher level (thread/forum)" this should be visible at places that otherwise would offer to activate notification on a lower level.

JF 19 Apr 2010: Hi Nadia, the feature is currently (development trunk) not implemented as decided in the Jour Fixe.
  • The settings are NOT in the "Edit Properties" ("Settings") tab. Instead there is a new tab "Members". In general, we do not want an additional "Members" tab.
  • Additionally the setting is available for each user, which we did not want since it is too complex in handling (see JF Oct 2009).
  • IF we keep the user lists, they should be activated by a new setting "Set notification per user" and be a subtab "Notifications" under the "Edit Properties" ("Settings"). The subtab for the existing settings screen could be named "Main Settings". (-> No "Members" tab, "Edit Properties" is renamend "Settings", two subtabs in "Settings": "Main Settings" and "Notifications" (if activated))

Nadia Ahmad, 26.

JF 31 May 2010: Hi Nadia, thanks for these major improvements. We suggest to use the same term for "Benutzer" vs. "Mitglieder" in the Options. We would prefer "Mitglieder", or better "Course/Group Members".

One question: How is the handling exactly, when the forum is linked in multiple courses/groups (or nested groups)?

Nadia 31.05.2010: It depends directly on the parent tree node if and which members are listed. For example: A course contains a group and for the group exists a forum, only the members of the group are shown in the list or will be notified automatically.
