This is not a feature request but a general information on changes in the English and German language file for ILIAS version 11. Several of these changes are part of the project for gender mainstreaming funded by ILIAS.nrw.
1 Components and Language Entries
1.1 Updates to the German Language File
1.1.1 Test and Assessment
In line with the phase one changes to the English language entries for the Test and Assessment Object (see below), certain changes have been made to the German entries too. These include cutting out unnecessary words (in line with the new English entries), improving misleading labels and adding more detail to info lines (again, in line with the new English entries). Also, certain terms have been corrected, for example, 'ILIAS-Prüfungsnummer' has been replaced with 'ILIAS-Test-ID'. For the full changes, please see the file below.
1.1.2 Data Collection
Also in line with changes to the English language entries for the Data Collection Object (see below), some changes have been made to the German language entries. These generally include changes to info lines and labels to improve clarity.
1.1.3 Survey
The German language entries for the Survey Object were given a complete overhaul by Surlabs in line with the work for ILIAS10 on the English language entries. Changes include improving info lines; making certain entries sound more modern e.g. changing 'Zugangsschlüssel' to 'Zugangscode'; correcting 'mistakes' like changing 'Bis zu x punkte' to 'Ab x Punkte', etc.
1.2 Changes due to Gendermainstreaming of German Language File
1.2.1 Experte
There were very few language variables ("Nur für Experten!", "Expertenmodus"), all of them apparently out of use. They have been deleted.
Please don't reintroduce the term "Experte". We would be eternally grateful! You are an expert, we are all experts.
1.2.2 Mitarbeiter
The term "Mitarbeiter" had been relevant with Organisational Units and Staff List. We have changed it to "Team", "Teammitglied" or "Teammitglieder",
1.2.3 Nehmer, Geber
In the exercise, "Feedback-Nehmer" and "Feedback-Geber" are all about giving and receiving peer-feedback. Our attempt at neutral expressions include "Person, die Ihnen Feedback gegeben hat" / "Person, die von Ihnen Feedback erhalten hat", "Feedback von" / "Feedback an".
1.2.4 Organisator
The term "Organisator" was an isolated case in the booking pool, where it was replaced by "die Verantwortlichen des Buchungspools".
1.2.5 Teilnehmer
We have been continuing to look at the term 'Teilnehmer' (participant, participants) in many contexts.
Learning Sequence
- work started with ILIAS 10, now completed → no Teilnehmer anymore
- Tab "Mitglieder" > Subtab "Teilnehmerverwaltung" was not consistent, now: "Verwalten"
(streamlined with Course and Group)- table header was also streamlined to "Mitglieder" (members)
Exercise
- → no Teilnehmer anymore
- use of passive
- use of neutral expressions, "Person" / "Personen" being prevalent: "Rückmeldung zur Abgabe", "Person, die die Abgabe eingereicht hat" / "Personen, die an einer Übungseinheit teilnehmen", "pro Person", "Teilnehmende Personen werden darüber per Mail benachrichtigt" etc.
- Tab "Abgaben und Noten" > Subtab "Je Teilnehmer" now: "Je Person"
- table header now: "Alle Übungseinheiten von:"
- "durch den Teilnehmer gewählten Startzeitpunkt" now: "individuell gewählten Startzeitpunkt"
- "Teammitglieder" (in Type 'Team Upload')
- we've identified and deleted dead language variables
- ! please note: no "Feedbacks", only non-countalbe "Feedback"
Booking Pool
- → no Teilnehmer anymore
- users don't participate in anything, like in other ILIAS objects, strictly speaking
- omission: "an eigene Buchung erinnern"
- use of neutral expressions, "Person" / "Personen" being prevalent: "für diese Person buchen", "Personen benennen zunächste Präferenzen"
- "Beteiligte": "Präferenzen aller Beteiligten werden nach Möglichkeit berücksichtigt"
- ! please note: no "Organisator" here or anywhere, now: "die Verantwortlichen des Buchungspools"
- → no Teilnehmer anymore
- references to course or group members have been changed to "Mitglieder", consistent with our previous work in course and group
- omission: "Benachrichtigungen" in global mail settings
Poll
- → no Teilnehmer anymore
- omission: "Anzahl Antworten begrenzen"
- use of neutral expressions, "pro Person", "teilnehmende Personen"
- "Teilnehmer" and "Stimmen aller Teilnehmenden" becomes "Stimmabgaben"
- Tab "Abstimmungsergebnisse" > Subtab "Teilnehmer" now: "Pro Person" (consistent with survey)
Study Programme
- → no Teilnehmer anymore
- omission: "Teilnehmer-E-Mails" have been changed to "Mails"
- use of neutral expressions: "Personen" in the context of a cron job
Forum
- → no Teilnehmer anymore
- header in the settings was "Funktionen für Teilnehmer", now "Beiträge und Themen"
Individual assessment
- → no Teilnehmer anymore
- tab "Teilnehmer" now: "Bewertungen"
- role template has been changed to "Bewertete Person"
- use of neutral expressions: "Personen", "bewertete Personen"
- omission: "Soll diese Bewertung wirklich...?"
ECS
- "Teilnehmer" in this context does not refer to a person but ILIAS, for example, or Moodle.
We were made aware that in ECS development, they are called "Partizipant". Terms have been changed accordingly.- "Teilnehmer-ID" now "Partizipanten-ID"
- "ECS-Partizipanten aktualisieren"
1.2.6 Tutor
In general, there were not supposed to be any "Tutor" since ILIAS 9, but some cases of the term could be found.
It has been changed depending on context: to "Testverantwortliche" in Assessment, "für Sie zuständige Person" and "Personen, die Abgaben bewerten" in Exercise, "Übungsleitung" in Portfolio/Exercise, or by the use of passive.
1.2.7 Verfasser
The existence of this term, "Verfasser", had been limited to the personal news feed, where we were able to omit it. The crucial distinction has been made clear, which is if news have been declared as public or not, no matter by whom.
1.3 Updates to the English Language File
1.3.1 Change to Sentence / Title Case Use
The rules for choosing which case to use have been slightly simplified. All options to the right of radio buttons or check boxes are now written in sentence case. For more detailed information, please check the Styleguide for English. These rules have been applied to the the language files of the Objects reworked for ILIAS 9 and 10.
1.3.2 Test and Assessment
The Test and Assessment Object is in the process of having all of its English language entries checked and corrected if necessary. As with the changes to the language files of previous Objects, attention is not only being paid to grammar, punctuation and correct use of sentence and title cases, but more importantly to optimising the user experience with clearer, more intuitive labels and helpful info lines.
As the Test and Assessment Object is especially large, the corrections are being tackled in stages. Phase 1 is complete and mainly covers the settings, both global and local.
Main Changes
- Run / Pass / Attempt - These have been used as synonyms for the German 'Durchlauf'. None of these is a perfect fit as 'test run' translates as 'Probedurchlauf' and 'pass' in a test situation is almost always understood to mean 'bestehen'. Where possible, labels / info lines have been re-written to use a description using 'take the test'. Where this is not possible, 'test attempt' has been used. Importance has been placed on keeping the usage as understandable as possible.
- General streamlining of 'Settings' options - An effort has been made to remove unnecessary words in labels and options, moving details to the info lines. This results in a generally tidier look.
1.3.3 Data Collection
ILIAS 10 saw changes to the Data Collection language files. This work was broken down into two phases. Changes highlighted in green are the phase two changes.
Main Changes
- 'Detail View', 'Details View', etc. have all been changed to 'Detailed View'.
- Info lines and notifications improved to encrease to increase their usefulness.
- General correction of grammar and phrasing.
- 'Record' has been replaced everywhere by 'Entry' or 'Entries'.
1.3.4 Etherpad Plugin
Work has been undertaken on the language files of the plugin 'Etherpad Lite' which is a widely used plugin for ILIAS. These changes affect both the administration options and the user interface.
