Centralising News Settings

1 Initial Problem

At the time being (ILIAS 5.3), there are two places for news setting in a course (or group):

• Course » Settings » News Settings
• Course » Content » block News » dropdown entry Settings

Both setting screens offer different options. But all of them are related to the News block. This is confusing and should be substituted by a single screen where all news settings are centralised.

2 Conceptual Summary

• The screen "News Settings" (Course » Settings » News Settings) becomes the central setting screen for the News block.
• This screen should embed the settings that are currently shown on the Settings dropdown of the News block, too.
• The dropdown entry 'Settings' should re-direct to the News Settings screen. When calling the Settings from the dropdown and saving an entry in the settings or cancelling the action, ILIAS should re-direct to the Content screen - similar to the current behaviour in the News block.
• Settings that rely on both presentations (block and timeline) should be presented as one option (and not as sub-option in every presentation type), e.g. 'Notification'.
• The 'Hide News' option is no longer needed because the appearance of the feature is controlled by the checkbox for 'News Block'.

Killing, Alexander [alex], 20 Sep 2017: I support the idea. All container that support news are affected (also categories).

Glaubitz, Marko [mglaubitz], 20.09.2017: For our users, finding the news feature and turning it on has become a problem, because the settings are hidden in the current implementation. Many lectureres have wondersed, why we have turnd the news feature off for their current courses. These seetings need be more central - thanks for bringing this up, Alex!

Besides: it would be great, if there was an administrative setting that controlled the default for this setting. We would like to enable the news / timeline feature for all new courses and groups, for instance. If funding should be an issue, talk to me again :)

We suggest to add the following default-values:

• "Include Automatic Entries": Default on => Adds "life" to this feature
• "Landing Page": Default off => Because this is a completely new view, could be confusing if it is default on.

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], September 25, 2017: We highly appreciate this feature request and schedule it for 5.4. The request for defaults shall be added to a new page for "Default settings changed for 5.4" and discussed in the Jour Fixe separately (see Default Database Template Settings for 5.4). The request for a definition of default course settings per installation (by Marko Glaubitz) would be a separate feature request - and is highly appreciated.
