Discussion page for every wiki page

1 Requirements

One of the great success factors of wiki is the possibility to collaborate in writing textts and other content and discuss changes to existing content close to this very content on a discussion page that is "attachted" to the content. Often only very small changes can be done on a given page wihtout being impolite. The ILIAS wiki does not offer any way of communication within the wiki and the workaround as in the feature wiki (see below) is not practical with students at all, since most people will not think of simple things like adding a timestamp and username manually.

Thus, the wiki needs a discussion tab with the follwoing features

  • a seperate discussion page for every wiki page, which is created when the discussion tab of a page is entered for the first time to avoid cluttering the wiki tables in the db
  • this page could be implemeted in either of the following ways
    • (ideal way) the page could contain a single discussion threat / topic from a forum, i.e. transplant a topic into the wiki for every page to make a structured discussion possible
    • (cheaper option) a ratehr ordinary "sisterpage" will be created, which should offer at least a style that includes the username and timestamp with every text block that is inserted (liek the discussion style in this wiki, but with more comfort)
    • (cheapest option) the discussion tab is simply another ordinary wiki page that is "attached" to the wiki page

4 Discussion

Matthias Kunkel, 28 April 2013: It would be great if we could offer a discussion block in wikis. But I am not sure if the "discussion page approach" is the best. We all know this from Mediawiki / Wikipedia. But facing this Feature Wiki I would like to have the discussion already on the content page (like we do it here with section 4).
For me it would already be sufficient if I could integrate the Comment feature below as a page element.
But anyway - I higly appreciate a technical solution for supporting discussion and communication within the wiki.

AK, 27 May 2013: I think it is a good idea to have discussion text block already in the content. What we miss is a good and easy way to add the user information to this block (Name, Date, including link to profile) - we now have to do it manually. Additionally it should be possible to show/hide all discussion blocks. If these "personal text blocks" would be introduced as new page components an open issue would be, what other users can do with these blocks. Currently as used here in the wiki they still can be edited by everyone and up to now this is not a real problem (changes are always logged by the history).

Marko Glaubitz, 14.06.2013: When we have found a conceptual consesus, we would like to fund this feature.

Zenzen, Enrico [ezenzen], 12 SEP 2022: This request no longer fulfills the requirements of the Feature Wiki. In consultation with the maintainer I change the status of the feature request to "Redundant / outdated". If the request is still relevant, please update template and mockups.
