Rating for Learning Modules and Files

1 Requirements

1.1 Preferred Implementation (M. Kunkel, J. Lützenkirchen, A. Killing, 17. July 2013)

  • Learning modules should be rated "Per Page" within the learning modules. This should make the behaviour similar to Wikis.
  • Files are rated on the level of a container list (course, category, group, folder).
  • File rating and aggregated rating of Wikis and Learning Modules are presented in container lists, per item.
  • Groups and Courses get a setting "Enable Rating for new Objects", with the an additional inormation text that states which object types support rating.
  • Files, Wiki and Learning Module all get a setting that (de-)activates the rating. Only Wikis will currently provide the feature to use the extended rating (rating categories).
  • Unfortunately this will not allow us to introduce the rating for all object types at once, since there is not concept of easily getting settings in all object type implementations.

1.2 Original Proposal

It should be possible to activate the five-star rating feature for learning modules (as a whole) and files.

4 Discussion

Matthias Kunkel, 14 Apr 2013: Where should the stars appear in an ILIAS learning module. Hopefully not at the "Info" page which I would like to get rid of for ILIAS learning modules, see "Revision of Info Page".

JF 29 Apr 2013: We appreciate the feature and schedule it for 4.4. The rating function should be availbale in the action drop down (similar to comment/note). In general this feature should be avialable for all object types (if activated in the administration). A setting in courses/groups should be added whether ratings (and comments!) are activated for new objects or not.

MK, JL, AK, 17 July 2013: We specified the details of the feature more clearly above.

Florian Suittenpointner 6 Aug 2013:
I have one objection regarding the rating of files:
Up to now, the rating function is available on the "Info" page and in the object list where the file appears.
This way, the file can also be rated by users who cannot open it (i.e., who only have "Visible" permission)!
Has this fact been considered? To me it seems to be bad usability.

JF 19 Aug 2013: The rating feature should appear on the info page of files. But rating should only be possible for users that have read permission.

Kunkel, Reuschenbach, Killing, Lützenkirchen: We discussed the behaviour of the feature today and realized several usability issues:
  • The aggregation of ratings (learning modules and wikis) as shown in the container is quite obscure, e.g. if one learner rates only one page, the whole learning module already gets a rating
  • The different behaviour of ratings of files (clickable in container) and learning modules/wikis (not clickable, only aggregation is shown) leads to confusion.
We decided to make the folloging changes
  • No aggregation on the container level for learning modules and wikis. If enabled, these objects can be rated on the level of the whole object (not pages) in container.
  • Learning Modules and wikis get two settings
    • Enable rating for Wiki/Learning Module
    • Enable rating for Wiki/Learning Module Pages
  • Presentation
    • Learning Modules
      • Learning Module: Besides the learning module title, right aligned
      • Page: Besides the page title, right aligned
    • Wikis
      • Wiki: Besides the Wiki title, right aligned
      • Page: As side block on the right (like the currently existing "Rate this Wiki Page" block)
  • If rating is activated for the whole learning module or wiki, the rating within the upper container works like the current file rating.
  • It should be possible to remove the rating, e.g. with a "Remove Rating" link.

5 Implementation

JL 18 Jul 2013: This feature has been implemented as described above.

Activate rating for learning modules under "Settings" > "General Properties" > "Enable Rating".

Rating is done within the learning module "per page" as in wikis.

Courses: Enable default activation of rating for new objects under "Settings" > "Course Settings" > "Course Presentation".

Rating of files is done in container view.

JL 26 Nov 2013: The rating for Wikis and Learning Modules has been adapted to the specifications above.
