Big Blue Button page in Plugin Data Collection (incl. download of latest version)

1 Description

Big Blue Button (aka BBB) is an opensource (LGPL) Virtual Classroom server.

Current main features of BBB are:
  • Shared presentation in many formats(mostly anything supported by openoffice)
  • Text Chat
  • Video (webcam) sharing (1-n, or n-n)
  • Audio conference (1-n, or n-n)
  • Desktop view sharing
  • Virtual blackboard
  • Class member list
  • "Raise hand" funtionality
  • Alouds to create and manage several virtual classrooms

BBB exposes an integration API so it is possible, and not that hard, to create a integration layer on ilias that alouds to create, manage and join virtual classrooms. Other LMS have successfully integrated with BBB (moodle, Sakai, eFront...) as a proof of feasabilty

BBB in rapid development, so remember to check their roadmap for upcoming funtionality (as recording and playback of sessions, transcoding for h264/webm/html5, and other fancy sutff...)

JF 15 Nov 2010: We had a look at the system and very much like the idea to make it available in ILIAS. The implementation can be done anytime as an ILIAS repository plugin.

PC 30 Mar 2011: We plan to implement BBB into the Virtual Classroom repository object we are close to finishing. Work commitments are holding us up atm but it should be available for Openmeetings within the next week and BBB very soon after this. (my sincerest aplologies. Due to workload this has not been completed. I have passed this information onto Matthias if you wish to find out the present schedule)

May 2011: We have a first version of the plugin available. It is published at sourceforge for everyone to download.
It is a first working version, you can create/end classrooms and join them as teacher or student.
It can be vastly improved in terms of functionality and quality, but we are waiting for next Big Blue Button versions (0.8 and above) as they will implement several important changes, that could affect the plugin, as the ability to record and playback sessions.

October 01, 2013: New version of Big Blue Button plugin at Plugin DC: http://www.ilias.de/docu/goto_docu_dcl_3342_73.html. This version is used productive at FH Nordhausen.
