File Name Guideline

1 Description

The name of files that are uploaded/downloaded/zip in ILIAS is handled inconsistenly in different components of ILIAS. See e.g. Rename the zip-file-structure of file-upload-questions.

We need to work out a guideline for this issue.

So let us start with the first step:

1.1 Inventory

This is a - yet uncompleted - list of all features in ILIAS that would be affected (where files are uploaded/downloaded/zipped/...):

Export-Import of content

  • Course-Export (xml): Generate files like: 1316187558__0__crs_1386.zip
  • Wiki-Export (xml): Generate file-names like: 1316152373__1510__wiki_19909.zip. Renaming of this files is not allowed. If you rename the file - then import does not work.
  • Question-Pool Test Export as QTI-XML-file: 1316190167__4105__qpl__11114.zip
  • Question-Pool Test Export as XLS-file: 1316190321__4105__qpl__11114.xls
Export-Import of Members
  • Tab members, subtab export participants: Generate file-names like: 2011_09_16_17-201316186447_member_export_1386.xls
Export User-generated results
  • Exercise: Downloading the documents from members generates a zip-file with all uploaded document. The name of the zip-file is the name of the exercise. All document are in folders, the name of the documents are "Lastname" & " Firstname". Good example, works great. Problems with Umlauts (Username, Filenames)
  • Tests-question file-upload: Precondition: Members start a test and upload files in the question-type "file-upload". Administrators can download all files as a zip file. New implementation with ILIAS 5-1. See: Rename the zip-file-structure of file-upload-questions

2 Status

  • Scheduled for: not scheduled yet (has been scheduled for v. 4.3 but postponed due to missing funding)
  • Funding: Required
  • Development: Feature is to be developed by tbd

4 Discussion

JF 20 Sep 2010: The guideline is highly appreciated.

HL: Any funding needed? If yes, please send an offer to me.

JF 28 Mar 2011: The steps needed are:

  1. Inventory: A list of all features in ILIAS that would be affected (where files are uploaded/downloaded/zipped/...).
  2. Guidelines: Work out possible guidelines and rules for implementation.
  3. Decision: JF decides on the guideline.
  4. Implementation: Migrate existing code to comply with the guideline.
HJ, would you like to fund all of these steps?

Lauener, Hansjörg [lauener]: Some of our teacher like the feature described at: Rename the zip-file-structure of file-upload-questions. But Databay cannot tell us how much this costs, if we do not have a guideline. Maybe the funding of the first three steps would be possible - if I find institutions who are willing to pay.

Lauener, Hansjörg [lauener], 11.8.15: First step: Rename the zip-file-structure of file-upload-questions was funded by Universität Bern, and is implemented in ILIAS 5.1.
