2 Bugfixing for maintained versions 3.10 and 4.0

Last bugfix releases have been published at

  • ILIAS 4.0.9 at 18 July 2010
  • ILIAS 3.10.13 at 22 February 2009
  • ILIAS 3.9.11 at 02 February 2010

We went through Mantis and had a overlook about all open issues. All issues were screened and assigned to the responsible developers. We dealed the following issues in greater detail:
  • Mantis 6301: The redirect problem due to Google's changed handling of 302 redirects cannot be handled technically within ILIAS. We suggest to use Apache's mod_rewrite to avoid this problem. Stefan will try to find a practical solutions.

Next releases:
  • Due to the heavy workload for finishing a stable 4.1.0 release we would like to postpone the 4.0 and 3.10 bugfix release to beginning of September (week 36).

Mantis:

  • Mantis 6371 and 6347: Session adminstration: The new feature for a load-dependent session handling is overwritting the settings of the session reminder. Both features cannot be activated at the same time. We discussed to change the administration GUI and offer both features via radio buttons.
  • Mantis 6259: Glossary Issue
  • Mantis 6360: Language support in SCORM RTE: Some language variables in the SCORM RTE are not part of the language files but handled somewhere else. This is considered as bug because it is violating the development guidelines. Alex Killing will check the 4.0 SCORM branch if some variables have already been moved to the lang files and commit these changes to the trunk.
  • Mantis 6410: Teilnehmer vs. Mitglied: Some terms in ILIAS are a bit cloudy and not always clear. Example: Course participant vs. course member. We will offer a glossary in the development section of the IIC where terms in ILIAS can be defined. This offers more certitude for language maintainers as well as for developers.

3 Preparing ILIAS 4.1.0 stable

  • An ILIAS 4.1 release candidate 1 has been published at 20 August 2010: 4.1.0 RC1
  • All features are described in the feature list of 4.1.
  • Due to the vast number of bug reports in the last week, we prefer to continue publishing release candidates and go on with bug fixing and wait another two weeks with the stable release.
  • The next release candidate ILIAS 4.1.0 RC2 will be published at Friday, August 27.
  • A first stable release of ILIAS 4.1.0 is scheduled for September 5. A decision about publishing a stable release is taken in the first days of September according to the current situation of open bug reports for 4.1.0.

We discussed:

  • Removing course archives due to new export feature: We decided that there is no need for the archive view in courses anymore. The new export feature is offering real export versions of the course.
  • Same icon for session, calendar and booking tool: We suggest to use karm.png for the new booking tool and to combine the course icon with the calendar icon for a revised session icon.

4 Learning Progress and Statistics

  • Mantis 6432, 6431, 6430, 6429, 6428, 6427, 6426, 6381, 6299: Various Learning Progress Bugs : We discussed the bug reports. One has been closed (6430). Some other conceptual decisions will be taken between Jörg and Matthias.
  • Mantis 6381: Column "Object Status" in Learning Progress: 1st or last column? : We keep the order of columns because it is use this way in other objects, too. Example: exercise tool. As last column it is more perceived as a summary column (which is correct!).
  • The filter view will be revised and Show/Hide Filter will be moved from top of the table to the filter section. Jörg&Alex will try to find a good layout solution.
  • The Details block at the top of each Learning Progress page is vasting important place and repeating some information that is available at the page anyway. We remove the box, add important information to a new Title (e. g. when opening the LP of a user) and place information about LP mode and learning time at the bottom of the page (with the legend of LP status buttons).
  • Mantis 6428: The selection of items in the Settings view determines also the objects that are presented/choosable in the matrix view as possible columns. The current naming of this table needs to be adapted to this new usage.
  • Ulf Sanne is mentioning that the Summary view is not implemented as described in the original spex. Especially, when a lot of columns are activated to use a lot of key data, the presentation of the table is not satisfying (due to horizontal scrolling). Ulf will discuss this problem within his team. ALexander is offering a patch solution for ISN when the data shall be presented as described in the original specification.
  • Ulf Sanne is not accepting the decision of the ILIAS management board to keep the naming of the current Learning Progress feature as "Learning Progress" and not to change it to "Statistics" until a final statistics concept has been written for 4.2. Ulf prefers to call it Statistics or Reporting or even Learning Statistics. Due to the extension of the feature it has changed its character. But there is a conflict with the Statistics tab in Test&Assessment where a specific Statistics tab is already existing for the test results, but this tab could be renamed to Results because it handles only the results and their evaluation.

5 Feature wiki: plans for future versions

Skipped to next jour fixe at September 6, due to missing time.

6 How to become an ILIAS developer

Skipped to next jour fixe at September 6, due to missing time.

7 Development Conference Dortmund

We suggest the following agenda for the next development conference in Dortmund at September 22:

  • Skill management and compliance feature - development plans and possible implementation for 4.2
  • ePortfolio - concept and plans to implement ePortfolio functionality in ILIAS
  • Reporting - current implementation in 4.1 and future activities for 4.2, esp. aggregated access data
  • ELBA 2 - new features and improvements
  • SCORM - 4th edition and future steps
Please let us know if you have additional topics or issues to discuss.

Like in former conferences there should also be a two hours slot where conference participants can present their own activities and plans.
The conference language will be English, participation is free of charge.
