(Project) OER Connect for ILIAS 11

This is a project page that bundles several feature wiki pages which belong to a larger development activity for the ILIAS component Metadata, Export, Search, Administration, Cron Service.

This project is a follow up to the (Project) OER-friendly Infrastructure ILIAS 10.

1 Aim of Project

  1. Publishing OE Resources gets Smoother: Workflows for publishing OER-licensed resources to a repository are smoothed out according to the results of usability tests. This includes improvements to the technical compatibility between ILIAS and repositories, with edu-sharing serving as a case study.
  2. Guidance for Publishing: Some light-touch guidance to the publishing process for OER makes people feel more confident.
  3. Looking up License Status of  Collections gets Easier: Licence status of elements in collections is easy to understand. You can look it up at a specific place.
  4. One can Search for OE-Licensed Resources: Searching for OER-licensed resources in repositories from within ILIAS  improve their chance of getting noticed. The search is extended to include content found in repositories.
  5. Integrating OER by Importing Works Smoother: Integrating OER-licensed learning resources in ILIAS needs improving. Importability of content is easily assessed. If content cannot be imported it can be easily integrated in other ways.
  6. Harvesting and LOM Support are improved: Even more object types can get harvested and even more object types get LOM support.
  7. Options for making content more interoperable between moodle and ILIAS are explored. This is done by using intermediate / translational formats.

4 General Discussion

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], 25 NOV 2024: Tim explained what is planned within this project for ILIAS 11. The project is mainly supported by bwOER Connect (universities from Baden-Württemberg). Several usability tests are planned and findings might result in usability fixes for 10 and new features in 11. More ideas to improve the support for OER support are highly appreciated.

Statement UX/UI/A11y-Experts, 05 DEC 2024:

It is difficult for us to estimate how large the group of users who will benefit from this project will be - however, the easier it becomes, the more likely it should be that OERs will be used and offered. We believe that improving interoperability and compatibility with Moodle is important for the (public) perception of ILIAS. We are very pleased about the planned usability tests and would be happy for the results to be shared; perhaps they can be of use across the board.

Statement Privacy Clinic, 09 DEC 2024

From the perspective of the Privacy Clinic, we have carefully reviewed the project and found no issues or concerns that would warrant any objections. However, if any personal data is intended to be processed, we kindly request information from the involved maintainers and stakeholders.
