Abandon Test Export File (incl. Participants Results)

1 Reasons to Abandon Feature

The Feature to export Tests with participant result data needs a complete overhaul as it is currently implemented in a very convoluted way. We would like to concentrate our resources  to fix the current issues with question creation and the test player and would thus kindly ask the JF to agree to remove this function.

The import is currently broken for tests with random questions and has been broken for this scenario since at least ILIAS 7. We will find a solution to fix it for ILIAS 8 and 9, but this will be done in a way that will not ensure long term viability.

2 Technical Information

{The maintainer has to provide necessary technical information, e.g. dependencies on other ILIAS components, necessary modifications in general services/architecture, potential security or performance issues.}

4 Funding

Removing the feature from the ILIAS code base might need funding. If you are interest in funding this request, please add your name and institution to this list.

5 Discussion

Use the following discussion section to express your objections against this request or your consent to get rid of this feature.

Weber, Jens [jens.weber], 29 JAN 2024: Spontaneously I don't have any strong objections, but this still feels a lot like a questionable edge case to me.
Not having the option to re-establish a test with its results on a different plattform or in a new version of ILIAS might cause unforeseen problems or break some special scenarios.
As a first measure to mititgate this aspect, maybe only the result export for random question tests could be removed/disabled, but the feature retained for all fixed question tests (as long as this doesn't break).

[mklehr] This feature is a core component of our e-exam process (transfer of exams with participant results between 2 ILIAS instances).
"maybe only the result export for random question tests could be removed/disabled" would not affect us here, however

[csee, THK] To support mklehr: We also established a process for e-exams where the test is written on one instance but for the students a review of the exam is made possible with another instance. To add to this point: It is not uncommon to export test results and store them for 5 years. If a legal case emerges then it is possible to import them and show in situ. Although this is not the best solution it is the easiest one for individual lecturers and highly depends on beeing able to import a test with participant results.

Slotosch, Sven [sven.slotosch] I strongly support the previous speakers in not to abandon the feature. The feature is part of our future storage strategy. It is also currently being used to have a "clone" of the test BEFORE it is corrected by the examiners. This means that the effects of subsequent corrections can be tested safely and we do not have to carry out any bug testing on the living object.

Lanz, Jonas [jlanz] Please keep this function. We need it for the synchronisation (export/import) with the student administration system.

Strassner, Denis [dstrassner], 12 FEB 2024:

We stated that this feature needs a complete overhaul, to work in the future and also in the present.
We would first need to assess the current situation in detail to move the feature to the current version of the export/import-functionality, please contact @Denis Strassner, if you are interested in funding this improvement.

This will also require afterward a steady commitment to financing the maintenance of the feature. An estimate of how much time this will need yearly be given as part of the aforementioned analysis.

If no one is willing to provide this funding, the feature needs either to be removed OR it will not work furthermore in currently maintained and also future ILIAS releases.

Glaubitz, Marko [mglaubitz], 2024 - 02 - 14: From my point of view this is an excetional process. I am irritated or rather shocked by the nature of this procedure. "Pay if you want ot keep this feature" is by no means a good and generalizeable way for us to move foreward with ILIAS because it borders on extortion. A maintainer should care about how the functionality and the sustainablility of a feature can be  upheld. Threatening to remove a feature should only be an option if the funtionality is redundant or as a means of last resort.

We should start a discussion about this feature AND this practice in the SIG E-Assessment. Who has to authority to call for an SIG meeting?

Gerl , Stefanie [stefanie.gerl], 15 FEB 2024: Please do not abandon this feature. The feature is a central component of our defined e-examination processes at FAU. Without the export of test results, the test is incomplete. As mentioned by the previous speakers, we need the feature as a backup before post-correction, for storage, and for uploading grades in the campus management system. Let's please reconsider this together - preferably in a SIG meeting.

Sesterhenn, Fabian [sesterhenn], 16 FEB 2024: We need this feature. Currently test objects used for e-exams are exported and reimported on our main system so students can check their results. Students do not have access to our dedicated e-exam installation outside of the exam period.

6 Implementation

{The maintainer has to give a description of the final implementation and possible consequences for existing installations.}

Removed Testcases

The following testcases have been removed from Testrail or modified because the feature is no longer part of the ILIAS core.
