Abandon Timezones in Calendar

1 Reasons to Abandon Feature

  • ILIAS makes users choose their timezone. This is then exported to clients interpreting the data. 
  • This is no longer neccessary, all clients interpreting the data speak UTC.

Kiegel, Colin [kiegel] 2025-01-30: How will the timezone of the current user be inferred? Will it use http headers instead?

Roeser, Nico [nicoroeser] 2026-10-01: From my experience with a number of systems that are calendars or that implement calendar functionality I can say that it is important that the users can set their time zones, or events may get messed up. Particularly with calendar functions in web systems, users should be able to override whatever their user agent communicates about their time zone (as well as location, locale, language, paper format, currency, and so on). And whenever users read or write events, they should clearly see which time zone is used for that event (but that is beyond the scope of this feature).
