Improving perception of ILIAS content from outside

This is a project page that bundles several feature wiki pages which belong to a larger development activity for the ILIAS component Metadata.

1 Aim of Project

Several institutions and projects use ILIAS as platform to offer content also to users outside their own institution (using the so-called public area). Especially the easy handling of internal and external resources on one platform is considered as an advantage of ILIAS compared to a classic CMS or another LMS solution. But there are still some issues that should be fixed to get a satisfying user experience, e.g. search engine support, presentation of links in social media, LOR harvesting, ...

This projects consists of several independent feature requests. They all have in common that the perception of ILIAS content is improved for not-logged in users. The more we can implement, the better for ILIAS.

1. SEO for ILIAS : Users often complain that content in the public area of ILIAS is not as good indicated by Google as content on a WordPress page or similar systems. In a first step we need a concept how we could improve search engine support for ILIAS. In a second step this concept should be used to create related feature request and implement them.
2. Improved presentation of ILIAS links in social media : The way links to ILIAS resources are presented in social media tools is often not very satisfying, e.g. link is called as login page. An investigation should be made how social media applications like to have link information for a proper presentation and to empower ILIAS to provide such information.
3. Support LOR harvesting : ILIAS already offers the option to publish OER content in the public area (OER harvester). But information of such content cannot be harvested by external learning object repositories or speciliased spiders. There are already requests for such interfaces (e.g. "Metadata interface for querying by referatories"). But they never made it into the core. This project could be a chance.

Kruse, Fabian [Fabian] This seems like a very smart project from a marketing perspective. First contact to ILIAS is suboptimal right now at the best, and frustrating at worst. The possibilities of public content (like our ILIAS Society blogs) are not properly appreciated right now.
