Display only Nickname in Who-is-online? screen
1 Description
Users can only choose between being visible with their full name in the "Who's online screen" or being not visible at all. The option of staying incognito - i.e. only showing your nickname which can be identfied by friends - is not possible at the moment. In the membership-tab of courses for example, that option is available by deactivation the public profile. The active users screen kind of ignores this deactivation right now and displays the whole name of the user. I think this should be changed with the next update.
Here's the Forum discussion and Mantis page for this issue.

JF 22 Mar 2010: We agree that it should be possible to be listed with nickname (login name). We would like to add an the option for firstname/lastname in the public profile settings, too.
Hesse, Joel [Joel_Hesse] for privay reasons it should be to display only the first and lastname of the user and to hide the username, too. In some scenarios the username is more sensitive than the name. (i.e. personellnumber)
Zenzen, Enrico [ezenzen], 05 SEP 2022: This request no longer fulfills the requirements of the Feature Wiki. In consultation with the maintainer I change the status of the feature request to "Redundant / outdated". If the request is still relevant, please update template and mockups.
