Compressed View for Question Blocks

1 Initial Problem

Not all question types in a survey are suitable for generating competence entries by means of self-assessment. Since the matrix question cannot be mapped to competences, matrix questions must be transformed into many single choice or multiple choice questions.

This leads to long pages and a confusing presentation (see Screenshot) when showing multiple questions on a page.

Comparison Matrix Question vs. Single Choice Question

2 Conceptual Summary

A new mode is supposed to be introduced which is called "compressed view". It should be selectable for question blocks. As soon as this mode is activated single choice and multiple choice questions are shown on the left side of the screen while the different buttons of the answering options are shown on the right side (as it is the case for matrix questions). The answering options are shown on top of and below the input buttons.

Now, a questionnaire can be well combined with the competence management.

If this option is activated, all single choice and multiple choice questions with identical answer options are displayed in a "compressed view"-question block. All other questions within the block of questions are still presented one below the other.

9 Discussion

Killing, Alexander [alex], 20 Apr 2020: I support the idea.

Amstutz, Timon [amstutz], 27. Apr 2020: I second the analysis of the initial problem. A quesetion:

  • Why are the entries of the Matrix View not usable in Self Assessment? This seems like an issue to me, the Matrix Question would work very well for this purpose?
  • Will all single choice questions be moved to one section. E.g. if we have the order A (single choice) B (Text) C (Single) with "Compressed View", will the new order be AC (in Matrix View), B?
  • If we have this settings, do we still need the Matrix Question? What is the difference then, how do we explain when to use when (compressen single choice view vs matrix view)?
I somewhat dislike this new complexity here. I afraid this could be the start to a whole bunch of view settings for blocks for specific question types.

Kergomard, Stephan [skergomard], 27. Apr 2020: I agree with Timon and I would prefer, if in any way possible, to either see how we can make the Matrix Question accessible for generating competence entries or to find a general replacement for the Matrix Question. I find the additional complexity really hard to explain to the everyday user.

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], 27 APR 2020 : We highly appreciate this suggestion and schedule it for ILIAS 7.

10 Implementation
