Create test questions offline

If you need any help in filling out this wiki page, please visit our ILIAS Community FAQ. And please complete the metadata information in the right column after having created the page.

1 Initial Problem

During our ILIAS training courses for university staff, many lecturers ask us whether automatic test creation (offline) is possible. Creating tests in ILIAS is very time-consuming. An automatism can intensify the use of tests in ILIAS, simplify the creation and save a lot of time.

Such a conversion tool for converting text document into ILIAS glossaries or learning modules already exists. With eLAIX (5.0), an addon for LibreOffice/OpenOffice, glossaries and learning modules can be exported from a text document and imported into ILIAS. Harry Bold is currently working on eLAIX 6.0 as a stand-alone application that exports Word documents to various formats (http://elaix.org/).

The Medical Faculty of the University of Bonn uses UCAN (https://www.ucan-assess.org/tools/) as a question pool for examinations for medical students. The test questions can be exported from there to ILIAS. We have commissioned the programming and use the exported questions in e-examinations.

These examples show that the technical export function and an import into ILIAS are possible. We would like to know how we can achieve this most effectively in order to create tests offline.

Attention: This wiki entry will be completed after the first information and exchange round in december 2019.

2 Conceptual Summary

A text document , which be exported as a test, has different parts (test title, question title, question type (MC/SC), question, answers, points and feedback). Questions can contain images, links and latex. Different content parts can be marked and identified with different formatting and exported as ILIAS test (Default test settings can be adopted). After the import we can be able to edit the test in ILIAS and import the created questions into the pool.
