Introduction of a show more-function for competence entries

1 Initial Problem

Competence profiles with many competence entries quickly become very confusing. The site becomes very long and users have to scroll through a variety of entries to see all the competency values. This makes it very difficult for users to get an overview of the entire competence profile.

Remark:
In ILIAS, the competence target must be achieved once. All other entries, which are achieved after the achievement, are no longer relevant. No learning content is displayed to the user once he has reached the target level. It doesn't matter when the level was reached.

2 Conceptual Summary

A "show more" function is introduced to improve clarity in the user view of Competence Management. If users open the Selected Skills or Assigned Profiles-Tabs, only the last entries for Measurement and Appraisal are displayed. Users must click on the "Show older entries"-button to view all competence entries.

  • By clicking on the "Show older entries"-button, all competence values are displayed indented in chronological order.
  • By clicking on the "Show last entries only"-button, only the last Types of Formation will be displayed again.

Remark:
This request implies changing the behavior to achieve the profil target level. The last entry in competence management should determine the achievement of the profil target level. In this way, the proposed learning content is always adapted to the current status of the learner.

9 Discussion

Killing, Alexander [alex], 24 July 2019: I support this idea.

Kunkel, Matthias [mkunkel], 19 AUG 2019: Three questions to this suggestion:

  1. Do we really need to indent the older entries? Is it important to highlight those entries that have not been shown in the first run?
  2. According to the mock-up, only three entries will be shown and the rest is moved under the "more" button. I would recommend to show at least five before the "more" button is shown. I am sure we have enough space for this.
  3. And is the page always fully reloaded when clicking on the "more" or "less" button? Or could this be solved by Ajax calls (which I would highly appreciate)?

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], 23 SEP 2019 : We highly appreciate this suggestion and schedule the feature for ILIAS 7. We prefer a solution without indentation for the presentation of all entries. The reduced list shows the last measurement and the last appraisal. Alex checks if an Ajax solution is feasable. The remark issue will be treated in a separate feature request.

Famula, Thomas [tfamula], 01 MAR 2021 : I support this feature. I have one question: Do we want the "show more" function only in Personal Competences view or in every place where competences are shown? When yes, we have to add the following affected views:

Course > Competences > Show
Group > Competences > Show
Survey > Competences > Show
Test > Competences > Show

Kunkel, Matthias [mkunkel], 03 MAR 2021: For consistency reasons, having "Show More" on all mentioned screens would be highly appreciated by the product manager. Do we really need two "Show More"s? I guess the number of self-evaluations won't increase that much. And the major reason for "Show More" is to present a screen that shows the most recent information on one view. If this presentation isn't sufficient for me, I click on "Show More" to see more datasets. BTW: Is it really a "Show More" or a "Show All"? If it is just a "Show More", how many new items will be presented per click?

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], 08 MAR 2021: We highly appreciate this suggestion and schedule the feature for ILIAS 8. We prefer one button "Show All | Show Latest Entries" that should be implemented for all affected views (see list above). As already decided in the last JF decision, we prefer a solution without indentation for the presentation of all entries. The reduced list shows the last measurement and the last appraisal. Thomas checks if an Ajax solution is feasable.
