file upload
1 Description
Revision of the file upload workflow: When adding a new file to the repository, the current ILIAS version offers two upload forms: one for uploading a single file, another for uploading a zipped archive of files. Several users are complaining about this and ask for a unique form that fits both needs.
A suggestion for the revision of the upload workflow has been posted to the forum (only in German): http://www.ilias.de/iosbb/viewtopic.php?t=5355. With this form it would also be possible to add two or more files at once to the repository without zipping them.
2 Status
- A general revision and improvement of the file uploading workflow is part of Upload multiple files and will be implemented with ILIAS 4.4.
3 Additional Information:
4 Discussion:
- The merged form would be complex. The mockup in the forum thread is missing another needed option: "Extract Zip File" which would be a "super option" to "Create Folder Structure".
- The purpose of some input fields would depend on the file type. E.g. if a zip file is selected, title/description could have no meaning (if the file should be extracted). If a non-zip-file is uploaded, the zip folder structure option would have no meaning.
Current discussion of feature in ILIAS forum: http://www.ilias.de/iosbb/viewtopic.php?t=5355
Screen 1:
- Title
- Description
- File
- "More Link"
- Save / Save+Meta / Cancel Buttons
Use Case "One Simple File"
- User enters title/descript/file (NO zip file!)
- User hits Save
- ILIAS creates new file object
Use Case "One Zip File"
- User enters title/descript/file (zip file!)
- User hits Save
- ILIAS shows Screen 2 asking whether zip file should be extracted and folders should be created.
Use Case "Multiple Files"
- User hits "More"
- ILIAS hides title and description and offers new file input field + "Upload Files"
- (1. + 2.) Optional Multiple Times
- User clicks upload files
- ILIAS shows title description input for each file and zip options (extract/create folders) for reach zip file
The solution would keep the first screen very simple, but would cost at least two steps for zip file uploading (which is now one).

Use Case "one zip file"
Why do we need in this case the question of whether or not the user wants the file to be extracted or not? Of course he will, otherwise he would choose the simple fileupload form.
The only problem is to not confuse the user by the naming of forms we present.
- Databay has already made an implementation of this feature for Helmut Schmidt Universität Hamburg. We would like to find a general solution for all create screens before deciding if this implementation will become part of 4.1. We want to have a unique create screen in ILIAS in the future.
JF 14 Jun 2010: We decided that we keep the current solution (4.0) for 4.1 as well. We will try to implement the accordion style creation screens for 4.2.
Matthias Kunkel, 20 Jan 2011: What is the current status of this feature? Shall it really be implemented for 4.2 and got funding? Or has it become superfluous?
JF 14 Mar 2011: We will keep the current structure and move it to the accordion behaviour that is envisaged for the creation screens for 4.2.
Matthias Kunkel, 24 Apr 2013: This feature will come with 4.4 as part of the file handling improvements (see Upload multiple files). Therefore I close this request and take it out of the list of suggested features.
