Add to homescreen prompt

1 Initial Problem

Purpose of this feature request is to further optimize the use of ILIAS on mobile devices.

To improve the use of "ILIAS" on smartphones / tablets, the accessibility to an ilias installation must be as easy as possible on mobile devices.
Currently, users need to go to the mobile browser to enter the URL of their ILIAS installation or to bookmark and log in.

We want to shorten this path and add ILIAS to the home screen.

2 Conceptual Summary

Add to Home screen is a browsers-feature for mobile- and desktop-versions that allows developers to add a shortcut to the Home screen.
Browsers that support this feature:

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Safari
Once users have invoked the ILIAS installation of their institution on a mobile device, they will be notified after period X (which can be determined by the developer / admin themselves). If users accept the prompt „Do you want to Add ILIAS XYZ to Home screen.”, the browser creates a shortcut and places it on the home screen of the mobile device.
The shortcut generated by the “Add to Home screen”-function can be customized, e.g. the logo of the institution / ILIAS logo can be used for the shortcut.

7 Discussion

Killing, Alexander [alex], 7 June 2019: This needs the introduction of a manifest file and a service worker at least. The SCORM offline player maintainers have also a need for a service worker for their next generation of the SCORM offline player. There was also the idea to do something similar with surveys last year Native HTML5 Survey Offline Player. I think this needs some general discussion, the upcoming Client Side ILIAS meeting on 24/25 will be an appropriate meeting to discuss this. The TB will also need to decide on the general direction imo.

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], 17 JUN 2019 : We highly appreciate this suggestion and schedule the feature for 6.0. We keep the discussion open about a possible technical implementation, esp. about introducing a service worker for ILIAS (see comment of Alexander above).

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], 20 JAN 2020 : We still would like to have this feature and re-schedule it for ILIAS 7. The possible technical implementation is still open. But using a service worker is still an option.

Kunkel, Matthias [mkunkel], 18 OCT 2022: This feature request has been set on the agenda of the next Jour Fixe at 31 OCT 2022. But there is no added information about a possible technical implementation added since the last discussion of the feature in January 2020. I recommend to first work out a plan how this feature can be implemented technically before pushing a decision about it in the Jour Fixe.

8 Implementation

{The maintainer has to give a description of the final implementation and add screenshots if possible.}
