Forum: Options to improve performance of thread overview

1 Initial Problem

In ILIAS the thread overview calculates the number of read, unread and new posts of a thread in real time and causes performance issues.
Loading times in forums could be minizmizid by introducing different options.

2 Conceptual Summary

New option "Presentation of the overview"

Option 1 (current default option): Display in real time The number of read, unread and new messages and the last post were calculated and displayed in real time.
This default option should be optimized as far as possible.

Option 2: Display for large forums (performance optimization)
Minimal representation of the overview page
Details are to be clarified, what minimal representation is, and which optimizations were possible.

Option 3: Archive presentation
For all users, individual information is no longer stored, only precalculated information, no new information is calculated in real time.
The information is precalculated. New posts and answers are still possible, but the presentation could be like for anonymous users in public forums.

3 User Interface Modifications

3.1 List of Affected Views

To optimize the performace of the thread overview some settings should be modified.

 In the administration for forums i.e.: Enable/Disable the displayed information for read, unread and new posts.

The setting for activating the thread rating feature should also  be available as a global setting in the global forum administration.

3.2 User Interface Details

{For each of these views please list all user interface elements that should be modified, added or removed. Please provide the textual appearance of the UI elements and their interactive behaviour.}

3.3 New User Interface Concepts

{If the proposal introduces any completely new user interface elements, you might consult UI Kitchen Sink in order to find the necessary information to propose new UI-Concepts. Note that any maintainer might gladly assist you with this.}

4 Technical Information

{The maintainer has to provide necessary technical information, e.g. dependencies on other ILIAS components, necessary modifications in general services/architecture, potential security or performance issues.}

5 Contact

  • Author of the Request: {Please add your name.}
  • Maintainer: {Please add your name before applying for an initial workshop or a Jour Fixe meeting.}
  • Implementation of the feature is done by: {The maintainer must add the name of the implementing developer.}
