Including Comments in HTML-Export in Blogs, Wikis, Portfolios

1 Initial Problem

From a learner's perspective the public comments of the teacher and/or of peers and other readers in a personal blog, wiki or portfolio are an important part of learning process. In the actual HTML-Export, these comments are not included.

2 Conceptual Summary

We would like to have the option to choose whether public comments are included in the HTML-export. If after the export a user opens the HTML-export locally he/she should find all the comments in the place and order as in the original online version.

3 User Interface Modifications

3.1 List of Affected Views

Export as HTML File options of

  • Blog in personal workspace
  • Blog in a course or group
  • Portfolio
  • Wiki

Start HTML-Export of a Blog
Start HTML-Export of a Portfolio
Start HTML-Export of a Wiki, if selected in the settings

3.2 User Interface Details

We suggest the two following options to realize our feature:

  1. After starting the "Export HTML" function, a popup appears asking, whether public comments should be included in the export or not.
  2. There should be two different menü items or buttons for HTML-Export options:
    • Blog: 2 Menu item
      • Export HTML
      • Export HTML including comments
    • Portfolio: 2 Buttons
      • Export HTML
      • Export HTML including comments
    • Wiki: 2 Items in the section "Wiki Functions"
      • Export HTML
      • Export HTML including comments

3.3 New User Interface Concepts

None, we are using standard modals here.

4 Technical Information

7 Discussion

Killing, Alexander [alex], 4 June 2019: First of all thank you very much for this suggestion. I support the general idea of the option to include comments in the exports. Some points I would like to discuss (also with the JF)

  • Instead of adding two options to the action menus directly we may keep one action and ask the user in a modal dialog whether comments should be included or not. This would keep the action menus less crowded.
  • Do these features need a global activation for wikis, portfolios etc.? It might be a privacy/user agreement issue to make users comments exportable for other learners this way.

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], 01 JUL 2019 : We highly appreciate this suggestion and schedule the feature for 6.0. We prefer a modal for deciding between HTML export with or without comments and we highly appreciate a privacy setting in Administration » Privacy to allow or prevent the export of comments within the HTML export. Default should be "deactivated" like the current behaviour.

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], 14 SEP 2020: We still like this suggestion and re-schedule the feature for ILIAS 7. Requests from last JF are still valid.

Killing, Alexander [alex], 8 Nov 2020: The current specification does not include the traditional export tab screens yet (Blog and Wiki). We suggest to add a "HTML including comments" in the export type dropdowns on these screens, too. No need for modals here.

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], 09 NOV 2020 : We accept the suggested solution for the traditional export screen (tab 'Export') and would like to have an additional entry "HTML including comments".
