User Settings: Configure away General Settings

1 Initial Problem

Users get bewildered by the General User Settings: They do not seem relevant plus there are many. 

In ILIAS 5.3 some of these options can already be set for users in the general administration: 

1. Some options of this form can be configured in Administration > User Management > Settings > Standard fields
   • Language 
   • Default Skin / Style
   • Hits/Page
   • Hide Me From ‘Who is online?’-Tool
   • Allow to contact me 
2. The option "Session Reminder" can be made/unmade a personal setting in Administration > User Management > Settings >  General Settings 
3. The option "Personal Starting Point" can be made/unmade a personal setting in Administration > General Settings . 
4. The option "Menu for Selecting Special Characters (Unicode) in Tests" can be globally deactived in Administration > Editing >  Character Selector 

2 Conceptual Summary

The following options should be configurable under "User Management" > "Settings" > "Standard Fields" like other user properties: 

• Screen reader optimization
• Last Visited
• ILIAS-Timezone
• Date Input Format
• Time Format

If NO option of User Drop Down in Top Bar > Settings > General Settings is shown, this tab should not be shown at all.
An automatic check needs to be introduced that checks if any of the general settings form items will be editable by the user or not. If not the first tab will not appear.
The "Password" tab would be the first tab in this case.

3 User Interface Modifications

The first tab in Pesonal Desktop > Settings "General Setting" can be configured away: The tab "Password" will be shown as the first tab.

I support the request in general.
The date format and timezone settings can currently be configured in "Administration -> Calendar". Since these settings should be available even if the calendar is deactivated, I suggest to move these settings to "User Managment Settings -> Settings".

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], 23 APR 2018 : We highly appreciate this suggestion and schedule it for 5.4. For all user settings that are supported in Administration » User Settings » Standard Fields a option to set the default should be available. Stefan's suggestion is accepted as well. Alexandra is asked to restructure the current screen of General Settings and cluster it into reasonable blocks.
