Sumscores per Participant

1 Initial Problem

Applying estabilshed diagniostic medical surveys to patients allows assessing the patient status or risk of relapse. These tests are normed.
A patient sum score offers an immediate and highly relevant figure on which interventions can be planned.

ILIAS does not offer sum scores per participant.

2 Conceptual Summary

  • A setting per Question defines, whether or not this item is contributing towards the sum score.
  • Sum scores add up the item scale value (as edited in the question) per participant.
  • Sum scores are sensitive to omissions and must not be calculated for participants that skipped a question. For these participants "n.a." is displayed.
  • Sum scores are sentsive to reverse scoring.
The Results tab of the survey gets a new sub tab "Sum Score" with a table listing User Name and Sum Score.  The sub tab also offers a toolbar with the Actions "Export" and "Print".

3 User Interface Modifications

3.1 List of Affected Views

  • Survey >> Results tab gets a new sub tab "Sum Score"
  • Questions >> Properties get a new option "Sum Score"

3.2 User Interface Details

3.3 New User Interface Concepts

9 Discussion

2018-04-16, Glaubitz, Marko [mglaubitz]: We really like this idea and would love to see this in 5.4. We could also imagine having partial sum scores as preconditions for routing rules (see the following Article Partial Sum Scores as Routing Rules in Survey).

2018-06-22, Lenich, André [andre.lenich]: It would be nice to develop this feature in general as a self-assesment with automated Feedback and Suggestions to improve, kind a like the "Psycho-Tests in Newspapers".
Therefore are large MC /MatrixQuestions needed.
The whole Survey should be presented on one, large Page.
Feedback shown could be predefined, depending on the score reached and the needed Ammount of different Feedbacks ,  showing a Page where related Objects, maybe learning Modules are presented.
For example: "You reached 85 of 100 points, here are some things you could use improve your Knwoledge on...."
or ".... You should consult your Doctor..."

Another thought, maybe somehow farout: Could we combine that with a "Catalouge of Competences"?

2019-06-14, Zenzen, Enrico [ezenzen]: Thank you very much for your suggestions and comments. With this request we try to introduce the Sum Score as a first step. I really like @Lenich, André [andre.lenich] suggestions. However, we should design these as separate features after the introduction of the Sum Score.

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], 12 AUG 2019 : We highly appreciate this suggestion and schedule it for 6.0 with the following modifications:

  • Please add an info message on screen "Results » Sum Score" and tell users the maximum possible sum score.
  • Please add a short byline to the setting "Sum Score" in the question form and notify authors that sum scores should be used for questions with required answers only (to prevent that sum scores could not be presented due to skipped questions).

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], 03 FEB 2020 : We prefer to move the setting for Sum Score from the question to the survey as it is always related to a specific survey and not a question in general. The presentation of sum scores should be sortable by sum scores as well. Please present request again after having considered the above mentioned suggestion.

Zenzen, Enrico [ezenzen], 19 FEB 2020: I have taken the suggestions of the Jour Fixe into account and revised the mockups as follows.

  • Mockup 1: Open Results >> Sum Score. The table can be sorted by the Sum Score.
  • Mockup 2:  Users can configure which questions are relevant for the sum score in the list view (Questions >> List View).

Mockup 1
Mockup 2

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], 09 MAR 2020 : We highly appreciate this suggestion and schedule the feature for ILIAS 7.

Killing, Alexander [alex], 8 June 2020: Current development status "setting on survey level".

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], 08 JUN 2020 : We prefer the suggested solution posted by Alexander at June 08 which offers an option in the settings of a survey to activate sumscores for a survey in general.

Suittenpointner, Florian [suittenpointner], 27 SEP 2021: Are you aware that scores from "neutral" answers are summed up along?

10 Implementation
