Commenting Page Editor Elements-Level or Character-Level

1 Initial Problem

Comments and notes can be made on page-level. 

2 Conceptual Summary

• Page Editor Elements like images can be commented on. The comment is attached to the element not to the page as a whole. Several comments can be made to the paragraph. 
• The Page Editor Element of type "Text" allows for highlighting specific parts of the text: Starting with a specific character and ending with a specific character.  However the exact identical bit of text ccan conly be commented on once. After this users would have to answer to this one comment. We are aware that this character-specific commenting is very complex and costly.

7 Discussion

Killing, Alexander [alex], 24 Jan 2018: Some points:

• We need to define how a side bar UI element works, if comments should be display right beside the text. Alternatives could be Popovers or other elements. A side bar would overlay/remove the current right column blocks, e.g. in a wiki. Also the mobile view will be a challenge here.
• For the referenced selection there are also multiple possible levels of granularity:
  • the whole page element (e.g. media element/text element),
  • a DOM node within a text page element (e.g. a paragraph or a list item in a simple list),
  • a DOM selection. To maintain selections on editing is a complex and costly task.
