Who-Is-Online: Advanced Settings

1 Requirements

Requirements, originally from Who-Is-Online: Usability Improvements and Advanced Options (which have been suggested for 5.2 in time).

1. Popup-Deactivation

Popup-deactivation of Who is Online

  • There should be a possibilty to deactivate the Who is Online - popup in the administration panel of the awareness-tool.
  • There should also be a possibility to individually block the awareness - information (Suggestion: Personal Desktop » Setting » General Settings). So if a user is just not interested in who else is online he isn't bothered with that information, even if the tool has been activated by the ILIAS administration.
2. Default state of new Users

There should be a Privacy setting to set the default state of new users Settings for ILIAS-Admin to define the default state of new users,
  • Default-value of "Hide Me From ‘Who is online?’-Tool

1.1 Step 1, Suggestion for ILIAS 5.2 (Alex Killing, 23 Aug 2016)

First I quote the JF from June 20, 2016: "...Additionally, we would like to use the notification configuration (see http://www.ilias.de/docu/goto_docu_pg_57146_42.html) to administrate the available channels and defaults for the several communication channels.", see Who-Is-Online: Usability Improvements and Advanced Options.

The general notification configuration service will not come with 5.2 (Databay will not have the resources until 26.Aug, see FW page above). I do not recommend to implement everything that is supported by the notification configuration service for the who-is-online tool separately now. I suggest to only implement one single option in the who-is-online administration that (de)activates the on-screen-display notifications globally for 5.2. The other options/user settings should come with 5.3 with the general notification service as base.

3 Discussion

Kunkel, Matthias [mkunkel], August 23. 2016: If the originally suggested notification configuration service cannot make it into 5.2 due to missing ressources, a general setting to enable and disable OSD for the Who-is-online? tool is highly appreciated. It will allow some more institutions to use the Who-is-online? tool without annoying their users. After consulting the responsible maintainer, I schedule this feature for 5.2. Nevertheless, it would be nice if we could have a notification configuration service for users in an upcoming version.

Killing, Alexander [alex], 24 Aug, 2016: Ready for approval at https://github.com/leifos-gmbh/ILIAS/tree/5_2_awareness_osd.

Hesse, Joel [Joel_Hesse] The data protection officer in three companies i know now, voted to change the default opt-out to opt-in. (default: "hide my status in Who is online".
