Passed Status of Recommended Materials Triggers Competence Level Assignment

Back to Overview Page

1 Initial Problem

In addition to the FW article Show Profile-Scheduled Competence Levels on Personal Desktop, here comes a feature requrest connecting to it:
Views associated with competence profiles cannot only display competences and the associated data but also information on recommended learning material supposed to help increasing one's competence or one's compliance with competence requirements.
However, there are two aspects where ILIAS could offer more functionality in order to improve the usability of those views:

  1. By now, recommendations can only be displayed in the competence results of tests and 360° feedback surveys. This way, users do not have a centralized access to check recommendations on how they can increase their compliance with competence requirements made on them.

  2. By now, nothing happens after such material has been processed successfully but the competence data will stay as it is as long as no other test or survey will deliver more data.
However, often recommended materials do not only contain learning content but also means of assessing the learner's increase of competence. The recommended learning material is always associated with exactly one specific competence level.

2 Conceptual Summary

  1. Recommendations should also appear in "Personal Desktop > My Competences", or to be more precise, in the new view "Competence Profiles".

  2. This level assigned to a piece of recommended material should automatically be assigned to the learner after the recommended material has been processed successfully.
In analogy to similar assessment issues like dissolving preconditions or issueing certificates, the trigger for such an automatic assignment should be a "Passed" status which can be determined by Courses, Tests and SCORM Learning Modules (and, actually, also by Exercises but they will be ignored in this article).

However, while every repository object can be selected as recommended material, surely not all of them can serve as a trigger, so there must be a way to select trigger objects among the recommended materials.

3 User Interface Modifications

3.1 List of Affected Views

  1. "Personal Desktop > My Competences > Competence Profiles" (yet to be introduced)

  2. skmg_lev/level_resources/

3.2 User Interface Details

  1. skmg_lev/level_resources/:

    • In the list of recommended materials for a competence level, ILIAS should offer:
      • A button "Select Trigger" above and below the list that can be used in combination with the list items' checkboxes.
      • An additional column "Usage" indicating which object(s) have been selected as triggers.
    • In case objects are selected which do not feature a "Passed" status, ILIAS should throw a warning message indicating that only Courses, Tests and SCORM Learning Modules can be selected as a trigger.

7 Discussion

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], Sep 26, 2016: We highly appreciate this suggestion and schedule it for 5.3. All core repository objects (not plugins) that support learning progress should trigger competence levels.
