Link All Content of a Category or Folder

1 Description

Currently you can only link objects in a category or a folder setting a hook in front of each item and then click "Link".
It should be possible to link all content of a category or a folder when setting a hook in front of it and then clicking a button "Link all content" or switching into the category or folder and marking all items at once and then clicking "Link".

2 Status

  • Request is rejected due to technical reasons, see Jour Fixe decision

JF 2 Nov 2009: Hi Nadine, ILIAS 4.0 offers a "Select All" button in the "Manage" screen of the repository. This gives you the possibility to quickly select, e.g. all files, in a container. Does this fit your needs?

We appreciate the idea of linking a folder. At the moment it's not possible to link folders as you can link groups. We are sure, that it gave several scenarios, where linked folders are desirable.

For example: A teacher has an course with 5 different study groups (for example different specialities of a topic but same background). The members of the course can join a group. The administrator of the course likes to link different materials (files, lernmodules, etc.), which he has collected in a own folder called "study materials", into this 5 study groups. With the possibility of linking this one folder "study materials" he has less to link and doesn't run the risk of missing some of the materials. So he has to link the folder 5 times and not more. If he changes something in his folder "study materials", it will be changed also in the linked folder in the study groups.

JF 28 Jun 2010: It is not possible to link any container directly due to technical reasons. Linking means: A new reference in the repository tree (in a new permission context). This works with a single node in the repository tree, but not with a whole subtree, since the subtree cannot be "synchronised" with the original one. You would end up with an "empty folder node".

C'est dommage!
This would have been a nice one. Often ask by our lecturers, too. If a miracle occurs and technology will be able to do that: Tell us!

When you want to link a folder, then you get actually the following failure message:

Failure Message
Folders are not allowed to be linked

Usability is good, when you also give a solution - what can the user do to solve his problem:
A suggestion of the new wording:

Failure Message
Folders are not allowed to be linked. You have to link each object from this folder(s) to another area.

JF 25 Nov 2013:
We agree that the message should be improved, our suggestion: "It is not possible to link folders due to technical reasons. Instead you may link single objects of folders to other areas."

For categories/courses

"It is not possible to link categories due to technical reasons. Instead you may link single objects of categories to other areas or use a category reference."
