News Notification for Courses and Groups

1 Requirements

If a forum is embedded in a group or course, a new sub-tab is presented in the Settings-tab: Notifications.

In this sub-tab 'Forum Notification Settings' one can determine whether every user decides individually to be notifed about new posts, or if the moderator decides for all members to get the notification or if this is a setting per member.
 
 
 

It would be very helpful to have these options for course / group notifications, too. Users with access to the Settings tab can activate the notifications for the members or leave this decision to them individually.

3 Discussion

JourFixe, ILIAS [jourfixe], 13 July 2015: The feature should be called "News Notification" (if possible as subcheckbox under news). The options should look the same as in the forum (Matthias will make a suggestion). The "Settings per Course/Group Member" option should be abandonded (we think it is too complex and does not add substantial added value). We schedule the feature for 5.1.

Kunkel, Matthias [mkunkel], August 04, 2015: According to the suggestion of the Jour Fixe, I have changed the page name from "Activating Notification for Courses and Groups very much like in Forums" to "News Notification for Courses and Groups".

And I have added a suggestion for integrating the news notification settings into the existing group (or course) settings, see below.

• IMHO we do not need a dedicated checkbox to activate the news notification. Once ‘News’ is activated, the news notification feature is available as well. Default setting (for a new group / course) would be "Each user..." - which means ‘Notification is disabled by default and has to be enabled by each user individually’.
• Unlike at my Photoshop mockup, I  suggest to speak always of "news notification", e.g.: ‘Each user decides about news notification’.

4 Implementation

, 12 Aug 2015: The course/group notification settings have been adapted to the forum settings. The wording has been enhanced and should now be the same in forums and courses / groups.
