Excel2XML - User Management with Excel

1 Overview

To effectively manage many users on ILIAS the graphical interface might not be enough. For that case ILIAS does have a feature (among others) to import the data as XML file.
 
To create such an XML file many administrators use an Excel sheet with VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) Macros, that was originally created by Werner Randelshofer.
 
The original sheet was adjusted and extended in many ways. This page is created to share the new file and to provide a single point for documentation of the ongoing development and also to gather new input on existing or desired features.

2 Current version

3 New features

• new columns added (TimeLimitOwner, UserDefinedField, limited access)
• improved usability (change column title, set mandatory fields for insert, select language from a list, added column descriptions  etc.)
• setting for password (export as MD5 hash or plain text)
• new in-cell functions (create login, create random password)
• extended file picker dialog (set extension always to XML, suggestion for file name etc.)
• error handling while export (bad values etc.)
• a Mac version is availble upon request (different file due to some Mac Excel limitations)
• ...
