Learning Modules: Display Media Objects in Overlay or Lightbox

1 Requirements

It should be possible, that media links (if being clicked) open the media in an overlay or lightbox view within the "same browser window/tab" and on top of the current learning module page.

Up to ILIAS 4.4 ILIAS supports four types of media links:

  • Inline
  • FAQ frame
  • Media frame
  • New frame
The concept is quite old, the behaviour of the "inline" and "new frame" links is be the same for all learning module layouts. The routing of the link types "FAQ" and "Media" depends on the layout. E.g. the two window layout displays both types in the second/right frame.

There are several possible ways to implement the requirement:
  1. Add a new linke type "Overlay" (somehow a bad name, better alternative wanted) that works in all layouts and show the required behaviour
  2. Add a new layout that "implements" the FAQ/Media frame as an Overlay
  3. A complete revision of the whole layout concept including the possibility to configure the "real physical" target area for each link individually (per learning module). E.g. FAQ -> Top/Right, Media -> Overlay, ...
