Drop IE8 Support

1 Requirements

To reduce the costs for support of old IE version we should drop the support of IE8 with ILIAS 4.5.

• Global share of IE8, Jan 2014: 6.6% (When we dropped IE6 support in Sep 2010, its global share was 7.4%.), see statscounter.com
• All windows releases after XP support IE9 or higher. Extended support for Windows XP by Microsoft will end on April 8, 2014.

Stopping the support would mean, that developers do not need to test against and fix bugs for IE8. However ILIAS institutions that would still rely on IE8 support could pay ILIAS service providers to provide IE8 support for feature they need.

2 Discussion

CB 25.03.2014: I suggest to rephrase that to “continually drop the support for all IE versions except the latest two” (or three the most) so this won’t have to be discussed over and over again. ^^

JF 28 Apr 2014: We support this and schedule it for 4.5.

3 Implementation

The support of Internet Explorer 8 has ended with ILIAS 5.0!

• Errors / problems occured unter IE8 are not considered as bugs when using ILIAS 5.0. Please do not create 5.0 bug reports when using IE8!
• If you cannot update your browser for which reason ever you still have the possibility to get payed fixes / workarounds from the related maintainer. In this case, please contact the service provider directly.
