  • ILIAS 4.2.7 published at 03 January 2013
Next releases:
  • 4.3.4 is scheduled for June 2013
  • 4.2.8 is scheduled for 29 May 2013

We went through Mantis and had a overlook about all open issues reported or modified since the last Jour Fixe. All issues were screened and assigned to the responsible developers. We discussed in detail:

  1. #11080 - goto vs. activation: We agree that these kind of scenarios need to be improved and created a feature wiki page: Error and No Permission Screen. Unfortunately we need some general implementation here first, currently this goes beyond the scope of a simple bug fix.
  2. SCORM Upload New Version: We support the idea to make this more flexible. Please contact our SCORM maintainer internetlehrer and ask what is possible.
  3. Screen "Learning Progress" in Administration > User Accounts: We will abandon this screen as it is redundant. The user's learning progress is accessible via "user account, edit > learning progress tab".
  4. 11098: Activate 360° Mode : We prefer to use a radio group here with two options:
    1. Type
      • Classic Survey
        (e.g. used for evaluation)
      • 360° Survey
(e.g. used for user peer review)
    2. Any additional information should be added to the online help.

3 Feature Requests for ILIAS 4.4

3.1 Developing Issues 4.4

  1. Goto link for password assistance and account registration: We highly appreciate these new goto links and schedule them as usability fixes for 4.4.
  2. Terms of Services: The behaviour outlined above is ok. It should not be possible to accept non-existing documents. The administrator contact should be clickable here (like in the footer).
  3. Improving PDF Generation: We confirm the proceeding above as described by Alex Killing at May 23.
  4. Hard Quota for Personal Workspace:
    • The information on disk usage should be displayed in the forms under the file input fields.
    • We keep the soft quota behaviour as it is in 4.3. Matthias and Jörg will work out a proper naming and description for the administration screen.
    • The switching behaviour is ok.
    • The behaviour should be equal to the soft quota (0 or unlimited).
    • Feature wiki page has been renamed to "Hard Quota for Personal Workspace".
  5. Taxonomies for Test Questions: We had a long discussion about the implementation of taxonomies for test questions and decided:
    • It should be possible to use one taxonomy as a left hand navigation taxonomy in the pool (like the taxonomy in glossaries). This the availability of this feature is activated by the consumer component but managed by the taxonomy service. Also the possibility to use a taxonomy for ordering attached items is managed by the taxonomy service.
    • If taxonomies are used for filtering/navigation the default behaviour is that all items that are assigned to the selected node or to one of its subnodes is retrieved in the results.
    • In the long run we would like to support taxonoymies and "advanced meta data" for question. This gives the author both possibilies, to use a structured taxonomy or a list of keywords (or a one-level catgorization presented by a drop-down list).
    • Currently funding is settled for the features under point 1.1 - at the time being only these features will be developed for 4.4. The Optes project will contact Databay and clarify whether the implementation of the unfunded features (point 1.2) is possible for 4.4. We would highly prefer to have these features available with ILIAS 4.4, too.
  6. Continuous Testing Mode: We discussed some presentation aspects of the feature today. We ask Databay to work out mockup-screens for
    • The question selection screen at the beginning of the test
    • The "evaluation" screen: How are the ongoing "results" presented to the user?
    • We also ask Databay to make a list of test settings that are "useless" for the new test type.
  7. Revision of Info Page: We would like to improve the usatbiliy for 4.4. We are moving more and more features from the info page to other user interface components (e.g. tagging, comments). This makes it dispensable for some objects, most of all for categories. In most scenarios the info page for categories is useless. For this reason it should be possible to deactivate the info page for categories with an option. It even should be deactivated per default for new categories.

3.2 Feature Request for 4.4

The following requests have been added to the agenda before feature freeze but were not discussed yet. All of these features have already funding. Nevertheless there is no guarantee that they will be implemented for 4.4 because of restricted development resources at the different service providers.

  1. Custom Icons for Repository Object Plugins: We appreciate the feature and schedule it for 4.4.
  2. Individual Icons for Folders in Groups and Courses: We appreciate the feature and schedule it for 4.4.
  3. No Groups Assigned: We appreciate the feature and schedule it for 4.4.
  4. Statistics for Mediacasts: We appreciate the feature and schedule it for 4.4.
  5. Exceptions for Appointments with Recurrences: We appreciate the feature and schedule it for 4.4.
  6. Shared Resources Table: We appreciate these improvements and schedule it for 4.4. However there are some important points:
    • The workspace and the portfolio features are completely separted features. Both can be activated and used separately. The screenshots mix these sections. Portolios are not objects in the personal workspace.
    • Date of sharing/last change: Both dates are not available in ILIAS.
      • A sensible implementation of a "last change" date would include changes on the page or media object level of blogs, too. This information is currently not propagated to the blog object.
      • The "date of sharing" information is not saved yet, moreover this would be a "multi-value" field, since an object by be accessible due to more than one sharing type. But most important, we assume that this is not the date the user is really interested in. Our interpretation is that a user should be able to set this filter to "last week" and get all objects that have been share with the user in the last week. However storing dates when the provider shares an object, e.g. with a group, would not be sufficient:
        • Three weeks ago: User A shares item with group B.
        • One week ago: User C enters group B.
        • Today: User C sets "date of sharing" to "last week".
        • Result: He would not see the item since the date of sharing would be some time before (s)he entered the group.
  7. Copy or Link objects: Repository and My memberships: We appreciate the feature and schedule it for 4.4. The naming should correspond to the terms on the personal desktop screen "Selected Items" / "My Memeberships" (depending on the activation of these screens). Moreover the "Selected Items" list should also list selected categories and folders.
  8. Portfolio-overview in member area of courses: It would not have been a problem to provide the "Send Mail" functionality on the dedicated tab as well. But we go with the first solution and schedule it for 4.4, since the majority prefers this solution.
  9. Skill Matrix: We appreciate the extension of the competence management and schedule it for 4.4. Matthias will separate the "Current Courses" feature to another optes page.
  10. Revision News Presentation: We support this idea. If anyone objects the new ordering, please add a comment.
  11. Need for Support & Support Offer Notification: We appreciate the feature and schedule it for 4.4 under the condition that we find an agreement on the "location" issue.
  12. Authentication Plugin Slot: We appreciate this feature and schedule it for 4.4. Please provide documentation for the plugin slot in the dev guide.
  13. Searchable Extended Profiles with subtabs and drop-down menus: We are unsure how the intended presentation should look like. Could you please provide some basic mock-up screens on the basis of ILIAS 4.3? After that, please re-schedule this topic on the JF agenda. If accepted, we may schedule this for 4.4.
  14. Search for Personal Profiles: We appreciate the general feature. However we need to align the implementations with the various requests listed at Need for Support & Support Offer Notification. We would like to schedule this for 4.4, if we find an agreement on the presentation. We keep the discussion open for now.
  15. Edit lock for wiki pages and/or page elements: We appreciate the (first) feature and schedule it for 4.4. As Matthias wrote the info message should name the user that currenty locks the user.
