Extending Span Formatting

1 Requirements

While it is easy to add new paragraph styles in the stylesheet editor for specific purposes, the formatting of words and characters (span) within a text paragraph is very strict.

To improve the usability of the page editor and to avoid that people start to use HTML and inline CSS, I suggest to open the DTD and to allow more formatting.

  • Assigning a defined text style from a stylesheet (e.g. different colour or spacing).

Additionally, the paragraph editor should support a button and tag for a non-breakable space. This would add a tag like [nbsp /] to the text that is handled like a nbsp written in HTML (if you add it in HTML it will be removed the next time someone opens the paragraph).

3 Discussion

JF 21 Jan 2013: We appreciate the feature except the nbsp idea and schedule it for 4.4. nbsps are ofter used for workarounds that could be solved in better ways.

MR 17 Mar 2013: Does "Assigning a defined text style form a stylesheet (e.g. different colour or spacing)." mean, that a user can choose the color by himself. For example to write a word in a text in red?

Matthias Kunkel, 17 Mar 2013: My wish would be to open the content.css for span formatting but not to allow all possible css options for each user and without assigning them to a style. I think the style-based concept is much better for having good structured and formatted contents. But at the time being I cannot add additional text style through span formatting but only on paragraph level or by using inline styles.

Marcel Raimann, 26 Mar 2013: In some schools the users whishes to have the possibility to change to text-color of a few words. For example to write one word in a sentence in red. I see, that this feature is not the same, so I just wrote a new feature request for this: http://www.ilias.de/docu/goto.php?target=wiki_1357_Choose_Text_color

Matthias Kunkel, 18 Oct 2013: Postponed to 4.5 due to missing resources.

Matthias Kunkel, 26 Oct 2014: Postponed due to missing ressources.

Matthias Kunkel, 27 Feb 2014: Implementation for sub- and superscript will be available with 5.1, see Add subscript and superscript.

Matthias Kunkel, 28 Feb 2015: This  feature was already scheduled for a previous ILIAS version but not implemented due to missing funding or time. We re-schedule it automatically for 5.1 to save time for discussing new feature requests.

4 Implementation

Requested extension of page editor has been realised as Style Editor: Extensible Character Formats with ILIAS 5.2.
