Repository Object Selection Input GUI

1 Requirements

In several places in ILIAS there is the need to select a repository item, e.g. a category. Internally it is represented as a ref_id but for most users it is not acceptable to (find and) enter a valid ref_id into a number input GUI.
For an external project a suitable input GUI has been implemented and might be used in the trunk with only minor adaptions. An icon leads to a layer where all suitable repository items are presented (see screenshot below). Of course all containers are displayed for proper navigation. Which containers are valid and what items can be selected (all other object types are invisible) can be configured for the context of the input GUI.

Some usability issues should be addressed:

  • when editing an existing selection the layer will not open the path to the current repository item automatically
  • the ref_id is still presented as a number input GUI, this might be confusing
  • the path to the current selection is displayed below the input GUI, there might be not enough room for this
  • an repository type icon might be useful
While this input GUI would mostly be used for administrative purposes at least the personal starting point could benefit from an easier interface.

The core work for this input GUI was done by mjansen/Databay with further generalization by jluetzen/Leifos.
