Improving File List Presentation

1 Description

The current presentation of files in a file list needs some slight improvements to support collaborative working with this type of content.

1.1 Problems of the Current Implementation

  • A creation (upload) date is missing for each file. Users cannot see if they have the latest version of a document - unless the author / tutor has indicated this in the file name.
  • A list symbol is missing as well as a file symbol. Why not reusing the known file icon (in a small scale) as bullet icon?
  • The file size presentation is too complex. Why ILIAS shows "982.02 KB" and not "982 KB" ?
  • Who has uploaded the file? If several users are working on a document (e.g. in a wiki) this information is very important!

1.2 Suggestions

  1. Presenting the files as real list entries with a leading file list icon
  2. Adding information about date and username, e.g.: Added by {user name} at {date and time}. This information is relying on the user and the date when the file list item has been added - not when the file object itself was created or has been uploaded the first time into ILIAS (in case it was added from the repository or personal working space to the file list).
  3. Offering an option to hide the username (in case there is only one author and a lot of file list objects).
  4. Presenting only full KB as file size – This should be the default style for all file size presentations in ILIAS!
