Breadcrumb navigation: Optionally show reference path in courses

1 Description

When a course (or category) is accessed via a reference in the repository it should be possible to show the reference path instead of the "real" path in the bread crumb navigation. There should be a global administrative option to turn this behavior on or off.

The need for this arises frequently especially when courses in complex hierarchies of categories are imported from campus management systems where one course often appears at several different (but equivalent) locations in the hierarchy.

Of course this could only apply when a course is access via a repository path, not from the Personal Desktop.

UPDATE: Maybe it'd be a possible solution to "simply" show all paths that lead to a course, ie. the "real" one and all the references' paths—maybe tucked away in a popup menu similar to "Last visited" in the main menu so it won't crowd the course view too much.

4 Discussion

CB 10 Feb 2011: Is this at all feasible?
CB 14 Mar 2011: Hmm, no feedback yet? As a first step ẃe'd really just like to know whether something like this (principally) be possible.

JF 14 Mar 2011: We highly appreciate this and would like to tackle the issue for 4.3. Maybe we do not need an option to disable this behaviour at all.

JF 20 Jun 2011: We do not think that displaying all paths would help the users much. And it could lead to performance issues as well. We further discussed the issue and noticed that we have to take care of the repository tree as well. In general we still support this implementation.

CB 21 Dec 2011: We'd in turn still appreciate (and possibly fund) a solution but cannot offer a technical solution at this time. :)

Zenzen, Enrico [ezenzen], 03 AUG 2022: This request no longer fulfills the requirements of the Feature Wiki. In consultation with the maintainer I change the status of the feature request to "Redundant / outdated". If the request is still relevant, please update template and mockups.
